Removing rust.

My "new" Model 10 has some very, very small flecks of rust on it. So small in fact that under normal light they can barely be seen, at least by me. Under bright lights and macro camera settings they jump out.

Anyway to clean them off without harming the finish? To the naked eye the gun looks near perfect so I don't want to do anything to damage that.

Start out using a pencil erasure. It's just slightly abrasive and won't harm the blueing but will remove small rust spots that haven't pitted the metal.

This worked very good for me on the barrel of a gun I purchased. I used it very lightly and took the rust off immediately, and did not hurt the bluing. Then oiled it up to keep it clean.

Kroil or CorrosionX, and gently. Start off with cloth. The object is to kill the active rust.

I'd stay away from steel wool--use bronze wool if you have to get that aggressive. You can get it at places that specialize in finishing supplies for professional cabinetmakers etc. Softer than the steel stuff and little broken off pieces won't rust.

Also remember that pennies made after the early 60s are not really all copper, and are harder than the bluing.

If the flecks are that small and the rust is not active, I'd probably leave it alone and protect it with Breakfree.

Thanks everybody. I tried the pencil eraser and it took it from being able to feel a slight roughness to being smooth as a baby's butt. It still shows up under flash and macro, but not as bad. I'll just leave it alone. It ain't hurting nothing.

A light coating of Corrosion X and left for a day, then rubbed off with a soft cloth should kill it and not harm the surface.

Well, here it is with it's mate. The rear one is a 10-5, with a 5" barrel. The one in the foreground is a the 10-7 with the 4". You can see some little "speckles" on the frame and cylinder of the 10-7, in the picture but it looks like brand new to the naked eye.

At least to my old eyes.
