How do you move the sights on a SW9VE? I was thinking of switching to night sights but not sure how hard it is to replace em? Any info is much appreciated

Front, rear, or both? For me the rear sight came out pretty easily after a liberal coating of penetrating oil, and a couple of good whacks with the chunk of 2x4 and a mallet. The front sight is basically melted into a hole in the top of the slide. You need to remove the slide, lay is so that the top of the slide is resting flat on top of your work surface, and just punch it out with a small punch and a hammer - it will pop right out, but be aware that you won't be able to reuse it.

Best of luck,

Dave

Almost all of the aftermarket sights have a small screw to install the front sight. Make sure you loc tite the screw. As for the rear a piece of simi-hard nylon or plastic is the best install tool to use a a drift and tap slowly in place. Brass or aluminum is the next choice for hard to install sights. If installing Tritium sights be carefull not to hit the sight too hard as you might breat the vial. A pushing type sight tool is deffinatly the tool of choice.

The local gunsmith was going to charge me twice the cost of the night sights that I wanted installed on my Sigma (I got lucky and bought them cheap - Ameri-Glo off eBay). Being the cheapskate that I am, I figured I'd try to install them myself. I read the threads on-line, lubed the hell out of the sight dovetail and worked slowly. The rear sight is CNC, and only needed a few strokes with a file, and a few raps of a plastic mallet to go in. No problems at all. As an aside, this is my first pistol with night sights, and I don't really see what the big deal is with them. I like that I can find my pistol in a dark room at night, but that's about it for me.

Best of luck,

Dave

I'm a total noob...and I did it. Have a Sigma 9mm. Picked up a set of night sights. Smith wanted near $90 to place 'em.

Front sight....as mentioned...this sight is "melted" onto a post and was simply dug out carefully by me. Remove your slide and you'll see the melted plastic that does the retaining. I simply knocked off the top side (without marring it)...then punched through to remove the rest. Replacement sight is threaded with 3/16" machined screw....very small head surface. Special tools are sold...but my $200 nut driver just fit into the recess and was just able to grab the small profile head on it....was able to tighten withouit problem.....use lock-tite.

Rear sight....mine was easy to knock out carefully with a punch...as mentioned, some penetrating oil would be good too. I used lock-tight to set the new sight in place and as it became "gummy"....made any final adjustments before it set.

Anyway...I did it, may not be per specs...but am happy, has shot well, and they seem to be in place well for some time now.

right on thanks for the info guys... i figured thats what I would have to do... i was thinkin of replacing just the front sight.... only to be able to see in the dark in case I got to pop someone who breaks in. Any ideas where I can get just the front night sight?

Many of the front sights for the Glock 17 or 19 will fit, but the manufacturers won't tell you this - why, I do not know. I would suggest trying CDNN as a source. As BCD indicates, a simple nut driver works well. I also used Loc-Tite to secure my front sight.

Best of luck,

Dave

Never tell someone where they can buy your product cheaper?

There is another thread on here with links to the Kimber store and Trijicon for night sights. The Trijicon site has a picture of the sights but the rear does not match what my SW9VE rear sight looks like and the Kimber sight from what I can tell looks more accurate. Has anyone used the Trijicon sights for the SW9VE, is it just an incorrect picture? Thanks for the help.

cool thanks guys I will look into it... thanks for the inside info on the glock sights... probably true what Jim H says... will the glock 17 or 19 fit without any modification? and will they look pretty close to stock beside the fact that they are night sights?

Can someone who's replaced the front sight on a "sigma" post some pix of the top and underside of the slide please?? I just want to see what it looks like with an aftermarket sight/set screw setup.. (Just curious basically) Thanks!!

Side note: Has anyone tried melting their OEM front site off with a soldering iron, (while, for instance, having a set of vice grips clamped to the sight, hanging over the side of something, so when the back melted, the weight of the vice grips would pull the sight off?) May be able to preserve some of the plastic "tab" and re-use the stock site, if ever reselling or wanting to go back to stock? Again, just curious..
