Ren.Wax prep question

How do you degrease a (well oiled) blued revolver before an application of Ren Wax.these guns have been stored using a coating of gun oil for years. I would like to start waxing the guns prior to storing them in the safe.Thanks in advance for any input.

ren.wax sells a product for this purpose..i simply wipe mine well with a clean dry cloth and then apply the wax and buff...you will be very pleased with the results

I wipe down well with a clean dry rag, but I also use the 'Preliminary Cleaner' by Reno.
It removes oil film and other contaminents from the surface. Go lightly though as I believe this has a mild abrasive, I could be wrong on that though.
I put the wax on directly after the prelim as there is no protection at all on the metal once the prelim is done.
I also use a hard carnuaba car wax at times. Make sure that there are no cleaners in it and it works well too.

I wonder if using carburetor cleaner or aerosol gun cleaner to wipe down the gun would do as well as a special cleaner? These degreaser/cleaners strip every vestige of oil from the gun. Anybody tried these?

I use de-natured alcohol...its cheap at the dollar store and with a soft cotten rag, it gets the oil off, it evaporates quickly and I am ready to wax...

I would be careful of the brake cleaners...they can be pretty harsh...

I am overly cautious ever since I saw the toilet bowl cleaner demo...it takes the blue off your gun just like rinsing dirt off the driveway...could ruin a gun pretty fast...

I am a bit afraid of using spray cleaners/degreasers, as you sometimes can't get the wax, into crevices, or places like where the side plates meet.

CLP, or gun oil will "creep", and better to have some there, than nothing at all. Wax, for sure, won't "creep".

I use brake cleaner before the Ren. Wax and have never had an issue. Remove the grips first.

I use Johnson's Paste Wax and degrease/prep with denatured alcohol. The combo works great.

I only wish I had known of wax for this purpose many years ago.

acetone will de grease it in no time, if you really want to prep it for wax, polish it first with flitz polish, then wax it.
