Did you get wanded on Beale Street? Glad you enjoyed Rendy. There are a couple of better BBQ places in Memphis (IMHO), but you still can't go wrong with Rendy. If you don't leave full, nobody's fault but your own! LOL!

oops left something out. as we were eating a man and woman came into the section where we were eating behind him were 2 men in suits obviously armed looking around and then took a table at the entrance of the section. people were all fussing over him. i asked our waited if the gentleman was famous, his reply was hes is only the first man to step foot on the moon. havent been impressed by anyone like that for a long time. he looked great, he has to be at least 76 or so. wonder why he still had the need for armed security?

I think it was actually Jim Lovell who was in town for a benefit. Armstrong doesn't do benefits. The two guys were probably Guardsmark. The guy who wons Guardsmark is big on the local social circuit.

rendezvous is good. The only problem is most of the waiters sort of have an attitude because they think they are famous also.

I think there are better bbq joints in Memphis too, but Rendezvous seems to get the most publicity so everyone wants to try them. But I won't go back there because #1) the waiters DO have serious attitude and can make you feel that you're a bother #2) Corky's and other joints around Memphis have ribs that are just as good and in much better parts of town #3) I don't eat in downtown Memphis anyway, especially if I have to walk down an alley to get there. That kinda creeps me out.

And Corky's will also FedEx them to your door. But in my opinion, all of them are best straight from the restaurant kitchen to your table in their dining room. An overnight flight just seems to take away the fresh factor.

Glad you enjoyed your visit and had some good dining. :)

dixiegirl thanks we had a great time, we were going to go to corkys then someone suggested the other. as far as going into the alley i agree, but i told my wife not to worry about anything as long as im there, reassured her that i had a plan if something happened. plan was if we encounted any trouble that she should stay there in the alley while i go for help. that didnt go over well. that was a couple of days ago and now she likes me again

There are lot's of better bbq joints here, just my 2cents. Rendevous and Corky's are both over rated. It's funny because one is owned by Greek's and the other by Jewish people. I don't feel that either can cook bbq like it should be but each has their own opinion as to what they like.
You need to get out of downtown on your next visit and go to some of the local resturants, The BBQ Shop, Cozy Corner, Leonard's (Elvis's favorite), A&R, Neely's, Interstate, just to name a few.
If you feel adventurous go to Mason to Bozo's or down to Southaven. There are numerous good bbq shops there also. I don't know if it is still there by Louis's in Moscow had great bbq.
A word of advise-stay out of downtown and esspecially Beale Street.

I like Corky's, but I also try to eat at Leonard's now. They are just off Mt.Moriah, and had a really good barbeque buffet the two times that I ate there last year. Ribs dry and wet, catfish, brisket, and all the veggies and dessert that I could eat. We LOVE Memphis food and atmosphere.

My personal favorite is Germantown Commisary. Very small joint but hands down the best that I've had. They have strong ties with the old Gridleys BBQ that was prominent in Memphis with several of their former employees (including a couple of Gridleys themselves).
I hear the same old complaints regarding the Renezvous and while I generally agree with them I still like going there. If you do go to a Corky's I recommend the onion loaf. It's a big-O pile of fried onion rings that are so good it'll make your roof leak.
Glad you had a good time in Mem.

The Rendevous ain't what it used to be. The ribs just aren't as good as they were before the mgmt change in about 04 or 05. Too bad.....

Rendezvous Ribs

If you want the best ribs that the Rendezvous serves go between 11:00 and 1:00 during lunch Tuesday - Thursday. They are only open to serve lunch officially on Friday. But, if you go there any day of the week except Sunday or Monday (They ARE closed Sun & Mon lunch and dinner) they will serve you lunch consisting of ribs, beans, slaw and rolls only and whatever you care to drink, water, sweet tea, soft drinks or beer. The ribs that they serve for lunch when they are not officially open are some of the best I have ever eaten there. Moist, fall off the bone delicious. If you go during lunch tell Geno the $100.00 bill brothers told you to tell him to get you the best ribs available.

Edit: The Rendezvous is also open for lunch on Saturday.

Danny A., Lewis BBQ in Moscow has been closed for years. It opened in the late 1930's and closed sometime around 2000, maybe 2001. We used to stop there and get BBQ sauce to take to deer camp. There sauce was a sweet molases based sauce that had just enough pepper sauce in it that the heat would sneak up one you after a few seconds of taking a bight. If you ever went into the restrooms the silver dollars that where in the tile floor had all been dug out of the tiles in the restrooms. Just googled Lewis Restaurant Moscow, TN. Opened in 1938, closed in 2000.

And no, the Rendezvous does not have the best ribs around. That title belongs to ME!!!

Ummmm ribs

Howdy,
Any place can lay out bad ribs if they sit too long.
Corky's are great when fresh off the grill.
Another time I took friends and was served ribs like me, old and tired.
If I cant get them fresh I would just as soon get them off the grill and let them cool and refridgerate them and eat them cold. They lose a lot when kept hot too long.
Thanks
Mike

Have eaten in the alley, was 40 years ago,was ok,,also used to tend bar part time while in the navy,,at the PEABODY, use to go up on the roof and feed them

Congratulations, you survived Beale Street. Now that you've seen it, don't press your luck again. There's absolutely nothing in or around downtown Memphis that's worth the trip.

Personally, I prefer Neeley's/Interstate. JMJO...

Truly curious...were you wanded by Security Guards at Beale Street?

It always amazes me the number of places that come up when you mention Memphis and BBQ. It's a real tribute to the town even though they apparently have some big time problems these days. Reminds me of another town down the river from Memphis that's gone to crap but still has some of the greatest restaurants in the world.

As to Neely's Interstate, BBQ spaghetti? Puleeeeeeeeeese! [Barf]ugh[/Barf].
