Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get a little help here. I inherited an old 586 (no dash) with an unknown past, and it looks like Bubba got to it before I did. It looks like someone filed the double action sear lever a bunch, and it is noticeably uneven. I can see the hammer wobble side to side as I pull the trigger back as a result. I got a new sear leg from Numrich in the mail, but how do I remove the pin in the hammer? Do I drift it left to right? Is it tapered? I just want to avoid screwing it up. Thanks!

It can be pretty tricky to cut a new sear to just the proper angle for it to function properly. From a couple of post here on working on Smith revolvers, there are fewer gunsmiths that are able to work on them.

In the interest of learning something new, could someone please explain how the side to side wobble is affected by the d/a sear? I'd think that it needs shims, and not just a new sear.

It might have to be fitted to your revolver.
Read the Kuhnhausen book.

Definitely read the Kuhnhausen book which provides detail for properly fitting the sear. Proper "let out" angle and clearance between the sear and trigger "shelf" is critical. It can be tricky.

Here are the 4 pages from the S&W Armorers manual for the DA sear.

When the sear is cut at an angle the trigger will lift the hammer and push it to one side. When the transfer is made to the shelf on the hammer below the single action sear the hammer will rock back to a more upright position. Clear as mud, right?

This is tremendously helpful. Thank you! I didn’t realize there would be much fitting required of the DA sear, but I’ll give it a go.
