I've inherited a m&p with a problem of a fired case getting stuck in the cylinder. It moves about 1/8th out then won't budge any further without tapping it out. I've cleaned the chamber well and still have this problem in only that same chamber. Can I just replace the cylinder or is there more involved (retiming, etc). Thanks.

New cylinders must be hand fitted by an experienced pistolsmith who knows cylinder work.
During fitting, he has to adjust/check alignment, end shake, head space, barrel/cylinder gap, and timing.
Personally, I'd send the gun in to S&W to find out for SURE what's wrong before trying to fit a cylinder.
If the cylinder is bad, they can do it.
Possibly they will discover some way of "fixing" the current cylinder.

As just an off-the-cuff idea you might try polishing or even slightly reaming that particular bore including the extractor for that particular cylinder.
yes, it would take a good "look /see", maybe measure that cylinder chamber to make sure its in spec,,,not already oversized,or deformed from improper polishing......if its smaller than the others then do as robert says, careful polish after you run a reamer in it......the reamer will let you know right quick..................

I'd recommend Cylinder & Slide Shop, especially if the cylinder does need to be replaced.
It almost sounds like you may be firing .38 Special in a .38 S&W cylinder. Since .38 S&W is about .008" larger, .38 Specials will swell out, sometimes will split. What does it say on the side of the barrel for caliber. .38 S&W or .38 S&W Special?
