I expect that originals are out of my price range. Is anyone aware of the availability of reproduction I frame extension grips? (Couple of originals in the attached images)

TIA

Tom

These grips look like the ones you want. But it says "for model 1891". Maybe they are identical in size to I-frame grips. The dimensions are given so you might be able to check. The cutout on the back of the grips looks like the same shape as the grip frame of an I-frame .32 I have.

Click on the small picture of the grips and an enlarged picture will appear.

The Model 1891 is the single shot break top. The grip frame is the same size as far as I know. But the front toe of the gf is squared off. If the toe on your gun is rounded, you'll have a slight gap.

Round toe shown here:

Actually the Vintage Gun Grips target stocks fit all round butt 38 DAs, 1891 SAs, and Model 1903 32 DAs. They do take some fitting, but look fine and improve the shooting experience with the little I frames. You should buy the screw set with escutcheons when buying the grips. You will be into it for $60 by the time you pay the postage.

Tom,

What is the shape of the front toe on the gun that you want replacement grips for?

The Vntage Gun Grips will fit "on" Round Butt 38 DAs, 1903 32 Hand Ejectors I frames and all later .22/32s, .32s amd .38 S&W I Frames. But there will be an 1/8" gap with the Vintage Grips that are shown on the website if put on any round butt with round 'front toe". If that's acceptable, no worries.

But the Vintage Grips shown have a flat butt inletting and do not have the curled-up-front butt inlet for the round toe. They'll only fit properly on a sq toe round butt 1891 or a rebated backstrap grip frame with front sq toe made for I frame square butt stocks starting in 1917.

My little I-Frame HE is a round butt with extension stocks. . These stocks fit the round butt grip frame to a T.

Here's a picture of my lemon-Squeezer. I've haven't tried to swap the stocks between the two. Both guns are early models.

Hey Hondo44, I sold the HFT I had with the worn set of wooden target stocks... it looks like I'll be putting in an order for a set of these to go on that RP if I ever decide to upgrade it. That project is the most likely to deserve a set of them, and it has a square toed frame. :)

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but the 1891 target stocks from Vintage Gun Grips will not fit a regulation police unless you do some major modifications. The RP stock frame is longer than standard frames and the reproduction stocks are made for a round butt, but it might be possible to grind away the inside base until the frame sets into the stocks??

Thanks!

Those repro extension grips look just like what I am looking for. Here's a picture of my .38 DA with the grips off --I think these should fit. Any opinions?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

The I frame RB grip and the I frame RP grip are the same length, but the RP has a square toe like the 1891. Have both in front of me now.

So the Vintage Grips will fit perfectly on the RP frame because on the sq front toe. But since the RB I frame has a Rounded front toe, the Vintage grips will leave an 1/8" gap at the front toe just like RP grips will when mounted on a rd butt frame.

Hi Tom,

Your round butt grip frame shown has the rounded front toe. Smith made target stocks for that grip frame with inletting to match the round toe. But the repro grips are inletted for a 90 degree square toe. You'll have a slight gap. If not objectionable to you, otherwise they will work just fine for you.

Square toe Regulation Police rebated, round butt grip frame. The repro grips will fit this frame perfectly:

Tom,
Here is a photo of target stocks that would fit your round butt with rounded toe. Not the best closeup photo but you can see how the inletting curves upward in the area of the front toe of the round butt. The inletting is not cut straight to the front edge of the stock. This style will fit your gun w/o leaving the 1/8" gap I cautioned about with the Vintage Grip repros.

You are right, I confused the extended stocks (correct) with an extended grip frame. Anyway, here is what Vintage Gun Grips 1891 looks like on a 38 DA.

Rod,
Thx, can you show us a pic of the inletting on the inside of the grip?

Jim, here's a couple pictures I took this afternoon. . They're inside pictures with lots of camera flash but show the stock inletting just the same.

Thanks, Hondo. Two questions: can you post an image of the checkered side of the grips? Also, any idea where I might be able to find a pair of these (new or repro)?

Thanks again.

Tom
