Hi: I am new to this forum. It seems like a great resource.

This is my first posting.

I have an old S&W 2nd Model Single Shot .22 which was made sometime in the early 1900's, and the original grips are long gone. A previous owner made a set of grips that are functional but are also pretty rough looking.

You can see what this pistol and its original grips look like in this link:
Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Single Shot - SOLD - Turnbull Restoration

My questions for you are:

Does anyone know where I can get a pair of replacement grips for this piece?

Either plastic (gutta percha, I think, like the originals in the link) or wood would be fine.

If so, would you send me information, please?

If not, can you refer to me anyone who might be able to help me with this?

I'm guessing that this is about the size of a J-frame with a round butt, but it is pretty old, and I'm hesitant just to try a pair of J-frame grips.

I don't know what other information you might need for this, so please drop me a note if you have any questions.

Many thanks for any direction or information you can give me on this.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! The SS 2nd is built on the I frame. The grip frame is slightly smaller than J frame but J frame grips that enclose and extend the frame will fit. Original grips, like on the Turnbull restoration, are made of hard rubber. You can find them on eBay, gunbroker.com, the classifieds here and on other forums. Replica grips made in plastic are available here.
