Request ID help on Model 10

I just purchased a Model 10 that I'd like some help ID'ing. I also just purchased a "Standard Catalog" so that I could get this information without bothering you good folks, but even with my new catalog this one has me stumped.

It's a 10-5, Nickel plated, 2" barrel, round butt, pinned but not recessed. Serial number 2D194xx which I could only find on the bottom of the grip strap. Inside the crane, besides the "10-5" is "73886" or "73686", and in bigger letters "G18".

Another oddity is the letter "N" stamped on the face of the cylinder.

Any info on this revolver will be greatly appreciated.

Nothing unusual... the 73868 and G18 markings are numbers used by the fitters to assemble the gun. Some of the true mavens here may be able to provide a bit more on them, but they're used for S&W's internal control. The "N" is perfectly normal as well -- it signifies "nickel" finish, which your 10-5 has. Hope this helps, and enjoy your new S&W.

The numbers and letters stamped inside the frame and crane are assembly numbers for matching frame and crane after finishing.

The "N" on the cylinder shows the original factory finish is nickel.

The model 10 was never made with recessed chambers. The pinned barrel indicates manufacture before 1980-82 when pinned barrels were stopped.

Thank you both for your helpful information. The question still remains as to why the serial number doesn't correspond to the K-frame serial numbers shown in the Standard Catalog. (Or, maybe I haven't figured out how to read the catalog correctly, yet).
