RETIRED FROM AUSTIN POLICE DEPT AFTER 27 YEARS...

I started when I was 21.I retired twice and came back to two different departments. The last I stayed with for 15 years until I reached 65. Health insurance is high and played a big part in my decisions. I pulled the plug back in January and I'm not going back this time. I still haven't caught up with all the stuff I've put off over the years. I've got plenty to do. Make sure you do also. Doing stuff keeps you alive. Congrats on surviving a long career. I like the statement above. "I don't miss the circus but I do miss the clowns."

Congratulations. To me, it was more of an adjustment than I expected. I retired last November at age 56 after a 33 year police career. Getting to play cops with some great people most of your life is a hard thing to walk away from. I loved every minute of it. I am thankful I got to do what I loved and was able to retire above the grass. I had to buy a Corvette convertible to get my mind off of it...a terrible problem to have!

Good Luck on retirement...I never could get used to the feeling that something was wrong with my exsitence after retirement....How do you ignor those feelings and thoughts that you live with most of your adult life....I still look at some of my fellow citizens with that feeling...This guy is up to something wrong...Old habits are hard to break........A tough transition sometimes, but it is a young mans job especially now.......Good Luck and good health......Somethings you will miss believe me.....

good job,i'm gonna try and retire at 56,very scary,........is there a certain key to retiring w/ the comfort of having enuff money to live out ur days?

I also retired at age 50, after 30 years with my PD.
That first several weeks that I had been looking forward to for so long was the strangest feeling I had ever had.

Really miss the awesome co-workers and being part of the 'brotherhood'.
Don't miss the daily dealings with the dregs of society.

Now, stay really busy working p/t at a LGS/Range, teaching CHL classes, shooting, fishing, hunting and preparing to move 3 hours away to the NC coast.
Congrats, and enjoy!
