As of 5:30 yesterday I am on vacation until official retirement date 6/30/22. Almost 22 years to the date that I started Sheriff’s dept.I started older than most of our deputy’s I will turn 67 on Monday and some days I feel 87.My wife is thrilled she never said anything to me about leaving even in bad times.She now tells me that I turned into a cynical ***.My last shift I spent mornings on range doing a last certification.Then on way to courthouse I came upon a car broken down in busy intersection ended up jump starting a car for a elderly black man with severe health problems.His niece pulled her car up while I blocked traffic with my patrol car and I used her car and cables to start it.I then went to courthouse and finished shift.I thought that was it and I was done except for turning in gear. Sheriff gave me a plaque and told me to keep my duty weapon the day before at a early morning class.My wife surprised me with a retirement party. She has been trying for years to surprise me with gift or something. She planned this for months .And never had a clue. I thought I would just walk away.My best friend a fellow officer and I went to breakfast and gun range for retirement party and three gun shoot for friend that owned range. Then we went to a friends gun store where he diagnosed a problem I had with favorite 1911.We then went to his house where our wives were cooking dinner. I did not have a clue until I walked up to his porch and saw banner. My squad with wives all came a Circut court judge all kids except son in El Paso and grandkids.Many others I did not expect to see anytime soon. Sorry I was so long winded but it’s hot I’m tired but I spent 3 of last 4 day on ranges in temps in the upper 90’s and it has been a good week.

Congratulations my brother ! I spent 30 yrs. packing the star and retired in late 2000. There truly is another life after the job, and I'm sure you will find many fun and interesting things to do. All the best !!!

At age 67, I sincerely hope you've made all the right moves pertaining to pension, Social Security and Medicare! And never discuss them with anybody except the wife. A lot of jealousy out there, most of it unjustified. I retired twice; do it enough times and you'll get good at it. All the best to you and yours!
