Congratulations on your retirement Dave. May you have a long and enjoyable one.
My dear wife let me buy something I wanted for a long time, a Thompson M-1 SMG.

A Thompson! Wow! I had to beg the Barracuda -- er, I mean my ex-wife -- for every box of .22 I bought...

Your wife is most definitely a keeper! :)

I have five years and I'll be able to retire from the Air Force. I don't know if I'll get out at 20 or stay in until I'm no use to anyone anymore. But since I've been in to guns I've thought it would nice to have a custom colt 1911 made to commemorate my time in the service and hopefully become a family heirloom. It can set right next to my grandfathers victory he carried in the army. I wish I had a service pistol I actually carried to pass on, but as I don't I think the colt is a good idea.

Back to the thread, I'll plagiarize that Klingon saying to answer this question in part:

"Today is a good day to buy a gun."

I thought you were plagerizing Chief Dan George.

Congratulations Dan!

I'd go for a 3rd model .44spl, or an old Colt .38 Super. Wait, maybe an Austin PD HD, or....... I can't decide now.

Congrats on the retirement. Instead of getting myself a new firearm, I downsized and gave each of my sons a Glock and a Mossberg 590 shotgun. I kept my S&W revolvers.

Retired May '08, and after a few months went to work at a large LGS part-time, after a couple of years, moved to a different LGS/Range.

Don't really recall how it happened, but I somehow ended up acquiring about 25 or 30 different retirement-gift guns to myself, most of'em S&W's.
