Just wanted to add a post that I am returning my new M&P22 because of FTE and FTF problems. About 80% of the time the 1st round FTE or the 2nd round FTF. After getting to the 3rd round it fires perfectly through the remaining rounds. I have tried two brands of High Velocity 36 and 40gr bullets in two seperate magazines with the same results after 600 shots.

I called S&W and after describing the problem they just told me to return it to them. It will be a hassle but hopefully the gun gets fixed or I get a new gun out this.

On a side note, I noticed in a youtube video the reviewers M&P22 came with a threaded barrel adapter which mine didnt include despite coming with the wrench that takes off the stock thread protector. Did they stop shipping these adapters?

Thanks

Sorry to hear your having problems with you 22. I have shot over 600 rounds with mine. I use federal bulk ammo from wally world. I have tried others but seem to get better groups wit them. I have had no FTF and 2 FTE. FTE only when my wife put rounds through it. She wasnt holding the pistol tight enough. Also happend to my M9 when she shot it too. I'm sure you will get your 22 fixed from S&W, and have a blast with it. Keep us posted. As for the adapter, im not sure. I too would like to know the answer to that.

I have found that one needs to be careful when inserting a full magazine. If I just stick the magazine in too hastily/aggressively, the first round sometimes stands straight up.

About the adapter, I believe all the barrels are threaded and that only some models actually ship with an adapter. Aftermarket adapters are readily available, fleabay is a good source.

What kind of .22 ammo were you using? Some brands of rimfire ammo typically work better than others. I put 400 rounds through my M&P22 when I first got it and, if I remember correctly, had 4 or maybe 5 FTF/FTE's. Given that we're talking about rimfire ammo which is not as reliable as centerfire ammo, I considered that a successful trip to the range!

Thanks everyone for the quick replies and concerns.

300 rounds each of Federal Champion 36gr JHP High Velocity and American Eagle 40gr Solid High Velocity. I wouldnt expect zero problems from any .22LR but when 8 out of 10 magazines have a FTE/FTF thats no good.

Replying to another post, "I cant imagine a "limp-wristing" problem on a .22. I have shot 1000rds through my Glock 19 w/o a single FTE/FTF.

Interested in what others think. Its going to seem forever until the gun comes back to me. :(

Correct on the round standing straight up when inserting the mag with force. I have done that the first time I fired it. I just push the magazine in gently in now.

Ditto. Inserting the magazine with the force I would on any other gun results in the first round jacked up and not lined up with the chamber. It's to bad too because if you jack it in fast enough it will actually auto slide release like the full caliber M&P's.

Mine didn't come with a thread adapter. Just the thread protector and wrench.

CCI ammo works well in mine. The LGS salesperson recommended that I use one box of CCI in the beginning.

However, he did mention that he had not heard of any problems with the M&P 22.

I have also read that some people suggest using 3 boxes of CCI to break it in and then you can use any ammo.

Having to season a .22 barrel is news to me.

My LGS recommended 40gr High velocity ammo from any manufacturer for the first 1000 rounds to loosen up the recoil spring. However my gun simply had something wrong with it and S&W had no problem with me sending it in for repair.

The gun was shipped to S&W today w/ 2day air at their expense, I'll keep everyone posted to their findings.

I had the same problem with the mag that came with the 22 . I purchased another mag and did not have this problem. So i sent the mag back to s&w and they said they are on back order. If your still having a problem try a different mag and use cci mini mags those worked with out a flaw in both mags. Shot about 300 rounds today with 2 fte with blazer 40 gr this was towards the end so it may have been a dirty extractor . But i would try the cci mini mags when you get it back ..... Please post what they found as the problem

I actually had a 2nd mag and it experienced the same problems. I would have definitely suspected the magazine if I only had one. I guess I could have incredibly bad luck and my spare was bad but I dont think my karma is that bad.

Its going to seem like forever waiting for the gun to return.

M&P 22lr ammo problem

I too had lots of problems with FTE and double feeds.
I went back to the dealer who said it was the ammo and sold me a box of winchester HV. Same problems.
I called SW and they said the ONLY reliable ammo was the CCI MINI-MAG. I bought that and have several hundred rounds through the gun now, with no problems. Runs like it should.

Thats interesting they did some troubleshooting on your call-in. I had just called and told my story to the person answering the phone and they just confirmed it had happened on two seperate mags. Then she told me to send the gun back. I was expecting a lot more questions or advice to fix the problem.

Thats kind of sad, that their M&P line would only reliably shoot CCI mini-mags. My only experience w/ .22 semi-auto is my 10/22 and it fires acurately whatever junk i put it in w/o issue.

I would suspect that the answer from S&W was a level 1 tech support person reading from a script. Are CCI mini-mags a high quality rimfire cartridge? Absolutely! That said, however, I've also run CCI Blazers, Remington Golden's, American Eagles, and Winchester Wildcats through my M&P22 and M&P15-22 without issue.

To me the OP's issue sounds like what was described above regarding the installation of magazines too quickly. Either that or maybe an issue with how the magazines are loaded. At this point it's difficult to say with any degree of certainty. Unfortunately we simply do not have enough information to make more than a guess as to the cause of the problem...

If you give CCI a try, I've had good luck with the various types of ammo the offer. Mini-Mags can be pricey for .22 LR, but they work great. A/R Tacticals are $24.99 for 375 rounds. I picked up some Blazers at $21.99 (regularly $24.99) for 500 rounds.

Once I pass the 1,000 round mark, I'll give some other ammo a shot, but I'll probably stick with CCI as the standard.

I have a M&P 22 that i didn't shoot yet.. this week I hope.. To tell you the truth about all the hype on 22cal rim fire ammo I been hearing.. I think is all a bunch of bull.. When I was younger I had a few cheap Jennings " not sure of the spelling" pistols, New a $50 gun they worked 100% fired everything. I shoot the **** out of them.. never a issue..later I got a used Beretta Mod 71 . was made in 1959 aluminum frame steal slide.. i have countless rounds through it of every type I could find. I even flat topped some of my own to make wad cutters so they would show up better.. I never had a miss fire FTF ,FTE Failure of any kind as far as ammo went. In fact I broke a ejector on the gun. Must be enough still left in the gun because still functions 100% to this day..Got a new ejector for it the other day in fact just encase i ever need it. I don't know maybe they are not making ammo as good as they use too.. I had not shot the Beretta much in the past few years so can't say but took it out last month and went through 250 + rounds of a few types of ammo : I had on hand" 20+ years old.. It was a blast! IF I have issues with the new M&P with new ammo I'll shoot some through the Beretta and see if it has issues just to see it it's the guns or the new ammo.. I went to the gun shop and asked for there most reliable 22 they had.. M&P was top's of there list. It's not a cheap gun it should be decent! Good luck with yours.. george

+1 If a gun won't shoot good brand name ammo, it's the gun, not the ammo.

Quality control on .22 rimfire ammo has sucked for years.

Sometimes you get a good lot, sometimes you don't. Anything you get in a bulk pack is a **** shoot.

I'll let you know how I make out with some of the new stuff I picked up. But still have no issues with my 20+ year old stock. Down to about 1500 rounds of that in Remington lighting bolt and some CCI mini mags.. The new stuff " I only buy it by the brick" I'll be trying out is two week old Remington lighting bolts ... Got them because they were cheap and had no issues years ago with them.. This will be interesting for me because I have a gun that has been 100% reliable long enough and then some.. I almost got some shooting done today but when I got down to my local range they were trap shooting and they keep going till the last persons done even if he's or she's the only one shooting. Tomorrow's my wife's "Penny" birthday so not sure if I'll get down there or not .I'll see how things work out time wise. George
