Revo grip recommendations?

I am using a 686 SSR for IDPA & soon ICORE Classic division. Both of the grip sets that come with the SSR are small for my hands. I tried Hogue soft rubber round-to-square butt conversion grips with the finger grooves. They are ok and were inexpensive but I'm still looking for the ideal grips. Any suggestions from those who compete with their wheel guns?

Lots of great grips....... but only one set of '"your hands"......grips are very individual ........

If you like the Hogue check out there website....... they have 3 finger grips single finger and no finger groves.........

For me I use the Spegel Extended Boot grips.... on my 4" L-frames.....they work for my hands...........

Size wise for rubber grips, the Pachmyer Gripper or Professional might work for you. The Grippers seem to work for medium-larger hands.

Oh great. I already have about three times as many holsters and mag carriers as I have guns, and now you say I am destined to have a grip collection!

Most of the local ICORE shooters in my area, which incidentally consists of 2 grand masters and several masters, use the Hogue big butt grips. I am especially fond of those without the finger grooves. They work especially well for my medium sized hands. One of the local masters, with large hands, also uses the Hogue Big Butt grips but he has his made using the big X frame grips.These started out as a custom order, but they may now be more readily available from Hogue.

More and more revolver shooters are abandoning the finger groove grips, because the finger grooves are not in the ideal location for every shooter.

Go to the Shooting USA website and check out the revolver related episodes, you'll see that the largest percentage of the revolver shooters use the big butts. I believe Hogue even makes a set of modified big butt grips that are legal for IDPA, but I believe they are special order.

I shoot Idpa witH my 625 & M15. Both sport the JM grips which suit me fine. I started w/ the houge rubber & did like them for fit, but found if my grip was off a little and when manipulating it ( such as reloading) the rubber grips were less "forgiving".

But as posted earlier, grips are very personal- something only you can choose for yourself.

I was using Big Butts on all my competition revolvers, but when IDPA outlawed them, I switched my IDPA guns to the grips used on the X-frame. These are made by Hogue, but they must have some sort of exclusive deal with Smith, as they are only available from S&W - and now only in black. I use them on my 625-8PC, my 646 and my Brazil contract 586-4 (shown below). I have medium sized hands and the grips fit me well, as well as absorb recoil well, due to the covered back strap (more important with the .40 and .45).

Grips are a very personal item on a revolver. I prefer checkered wood, the Hogue are exc & come in a couple diff shapes. YOu can sometimes find blems cheap on their auction site.

I have long hands and most grips don't fit me well.

Herretts stocks. Gun stocks available They will make them to our hand size. I get unfinished Jordan Troopers (actually made oversize vs what they'd make based on my hand outline) and then I do some final shaping and my own finishing.

When the grips actually fit your hand well they stay put without checkering etc... My carry gun (S&W 342) has Pachmayrs that have had their shape "adjusted" with silicone adhesive. Need to do another set of grips for it so I can send one to Herrets to make a pair out of wood. They ended up with a shape like the Jordan Troopers with the "reverse curve" at the top of the backstrap filled in.

I shoot IDPA with this Model 681 and Pachmeyr Decelerator grips.

I have a wide hand and medium length fingers. These put the pad of my trigger finger dead center.

On these the backstrap is covered instead of the standard Grippers with open backstrap. The design also forces me into a higher hold.

It takes a few attempts at getting the right combination.

I've become a huge fan of the Jerry Miculek grips, after having been a fan of both Hogue wood & Ahrends for years. I've actually just decided to switch all my regular shooters over the Miculeks and will be putting my knockoff Hogues and Ahrends up for sale - probably on here. This will give me one consistent feel no matter if I grab my M14 or my M696 or my M29.

The Miculek grips have no finger grooves which also lend to that consistent feel. They work great with gloves on for hunting or without for general use. They have no sharp edges.

I prefer the Pachmeyer open back strap grips on my square butt revolvers.. I'm using Hogue rubber round butt with finger grooves on the rest. They seem to work OK and I am getting use to them.

I've tried the Miculek grips,, lasted about 12 rounds before I took them off and sold them.. ( some folks really like them, I hated them )

Just ordered the Hogue rubber, no finger groove, big butt grips.
Had a chance over the weekend to handle 3 different guns with them on. They all felt different so some fitting may be required..
but I'm going to give them a try for USPSA.

(edit: I have a large hand with short thick fingers. I hated it when Glock went to the finger groove frame ,the points hit me in the middle of my fingers )

Order some from Herrett's , not an already made set, but a set where you trace the outline of your hand on the order form and send it to them. They will custom make a set to your exact specifications and shape of your hand.
Be sure and tell them all the particulars of what type shooting you plan to do. They will usually craft something just to fit your hand and needs.

Herrett's and my M63 N/D 4"

I have wanted a pair of Herrett's for awhile and was lucky enough to have found this pair of Shooting Stars, with the custom Skip Check pattern. These were not custom but if they were start at $120+$29 for the Skip Check pattern. I found them on Ebay while perusing hard to find square butt "J" frame stocks. They came in the original packaging which looked about 50 years old but they were as new as can be and fit my med. size hand perfectly and for $40 was a steal as far as I was concerned, while the Shooting Stars are a fairy common Herrett grip I seldom find the very cool looking Skip Check. They feel as good as they look. I put them on a M63 N/D transitional model, note the lack of a pin. I just bought the new M63-5 3" 8 round to contrast this older 63 and it is a gem. Check them out. The last photo are the cocobolo grips it came with that I need to do a refinish on

UPDATE ,, received the Hogue big butt no finger grooves today.
Put them on the 929 and tried them out.. Did Not fit my hand, skinny for my hand. Went back to the Hogue round butt with finger grooves. Fills my hand better ,, more comfortable,, better natural point of aim.. Waste of 80 bucks..
