I am looking for a certain revolver to be legal for NRA Service gun and I wanted 4" .38 caliber but I think the gun I will end up will be an Lframe 586/686.

can anyone direct me to the right revolver...

SW 4"
.38 special
pinned front sight (as I will replace the front sight with a taller front)
SW adjust rear
K/L frame
heavy barrel
has to be factory setup

I want a heavy factory gun. I want to take advantage of the shorter .38 caliber cylinder for any possible accuracy gains. if this piece is the illusive Lframe M14....yes I know a needle in the haystack.

I bought a 15-5 which is a H/B .38 special. I have not really toyed with it and put it up for next season. I pulled it out today and started to compare it to my trusty M65 4" H/B and the weight difference is obvious by looking. the M65 barrel is much meatier but lacks an adjustable rear which I think is holding me back in certain matches.

If the Lframe full underlug 586/686 is the way to go as far as being the heaviest of factory SW 4inchers, then I will trade my clean 15-5 for a clean 586/686.

I do have my original 1989 issued 686 4" but not sure if it will perform to the accuracy I would want as it was rough when I got it. I guess I could send it to a smith a let him evaluate.

Is a Model 67 4" essentially a Model 65 with the shorter .38 cylinder?

thanks in advance

If I was going to pick one it would be a 686-5, install the longer firing pin, buy a spring kit (9 lb return) and stone the edges of the guts and polish the right area's and you can get down to 4lbs trigger double action that will fire CCI primers every day -all day long. I have one set-up to shoot Federal Primers and it took me about 22 hours to build it and it has a 3 lb double action. Plus the hardness isn't removed on any parts but one and $7 dollars will replace it. So $7 bucks and two springs it will be same as new if you want it stock :D . Pm me if I can help you build one.

Bullseye Smith....

TIA

You're thinking of a model 64. The 67 is the stainless version of a model 15.
