The Model 17 with K prefix and in the 400,000's appears to be from 1960 according to the SCSW.

S&W revolvers with K prefix start in 1946 and end in 1983. (Not all of those were Model 17.) Your revolver with the serial #K4001xx was manufactured in 1960.
