Does anyone know where I can get a good explanation of the relationship between the hand and the ratchet in a Smith revolver? The tip of the factory hand is triangular in shape while the hand made by Power Custom is rectangular. Why?

Thanks,
David K.

The best source of info on the S&W action is the Jerry Kuhnhausen shop manual.
This covers everything about the S&W action.
There is a great deal of information in the manual:

THE S&W REVOLVER - A SHOP MANUAL - Brownells

The probable reason for the difference is Power either thought it was easier to make or thought it was an improvement.

My guess would be Ron designed the oversize stops, including the profile of the tip, so they could be hand fitted to each particular gun. If I remember correctly, Power's oversize hands (.100) are a little larger than the ones the factory offers, which are typically .096-.098
