Cannot be a 455 with a 17XX serial number. First Model 455s had a barrel shroud with serial numbers from 1 - 5000. Must he a Model 1917. Value for a cut barrel buffed and nickel plated Model 1917 would be below $500 in my mind..

That is not a 1917 barrel.
It CANNOT be a 455 with a 4 digit number that starts with "17".

The OP said the butt and cylinder serials match. Would definitely be helpful if he posted a picture of one of them. IMO, it is not .45 ACP. The headspace I see in the pictures is too small for ACP. My SWAG is the serial starts with a 7 which would resolve the confusion.
In the 1960s I had several S&W Model 1917 .45s' barrels chopped back for service revolvers like this modification.
