I am a student of the older Smith & Wesson revolvers and know very little, ah let me rephrase that, I know nothing about their self loaders. I know personally I dont care for their newer plastic guns. No use trying to convert me it just wont happen. I am just going to have to jump in the fray and buy one. Assuming it will be similar to a first boat purchase, I assume I will learn from my first few purchases to get just what I want in the later purchases. So I am asking for some model advise as there is so many. I will give my specs and if the forum would be so kind to advise me. I want a 9mm, double action with second shot single action, alluminum frame, adjustable sights, round triggerguard, not an elongated squared off one. I would prefer double stack magazine with @12 round capability. I also would like it to be somewhat smaller in length that the model 39, yet not a belly gun either. What models should I be looking for? I assume the gun would be used as most new self loaders are part plastic. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like knowingly or not you described a 6906

Go with a 39-2. I know it doesn't fit all of your specs, but it is a great classic. 8 + 1 is still a lot of firepower and the single stack allows for a slimmer grip. It is a naturally pointing gun also.

SW99 or a P99....sorry, love the revolvers but only a few of the semi's...no disrespect intended. 22A..loved mine, Model 41..great gun, 952...when I hit the LOTTO, I'm buying it....check out the S&W sw99......used for about 400 bucks...

The only metal framed pistol that fills all your requirements would be the model 5904, as IIRC it is the only high cap, aluminum frame 9mm available with adjustable sights and a round trigger guard. Of course it can be limited to a 10 round mag, but is normally 15 rounds or so.

If you are willing to accept fixed sights than the models 910, 915, 5903, 6904 and 6906 also would be of interest to you as well.

I'm an old revolver guy too. :) The third generation S&W pistols are excellent choices for guys like us. Good luck with your search! Regards 18DAI

You said you don't want a full size, so I assume this is not a 'target', but rather a carry gun you are looking for? In my way of thinking, no combat handgun should ever have adjustable sights...they are just to fragile. You also said you would 'prefer' a double stack magazine, so I assume that point is negotiable.

So, I will suggest the 3913.

I know this is the S&W forum, but you are looking for a Sig P228.

Not a double stack or adjustable sights but a very nice carry pkg.3913 LS.

The answer is the 6906. Alloy frame, stainless steel slide, 3-1/2" barrel length. 10, 12 and 15 round mags will fit. Available most places for less than $400. Most all are LEO trades. Carried much and shot little so cosmetic issues are prevalent. They were made with both round and square trigger guards so be careful that WYSIWYG if you buy on-line.
Unless you get lucky, you will need to add the adjustable sights as the 3 dot fixed Novak is standard.
Also, the 3rd Generation guns we all love are no longer available new. Fortunately for us, as Departments change over to the new polymers, the used market is flooded with trades which keeps the prices right reasonable. This is a double-edged sword though as the darn things are addictive!

It's only a single stack semi but the Sig P239 is also a great choice.

s&w 6906 fits the bill. great carry guns. tried many different types & settled on the 6906. next choices would be 3913 or 39-2 or 439 all great guns. hth.

While looking for the above described handgun, I purchased an older model 539. All steel single stack. I have always wanted a 39 but being a milled steel and walnut man, I avoided them. Now it seems I have one arriving from a gunbroker auction. However this has still got me in need of the gun I first described. I did get to handle a model 669? A second generation allow framed, stainless steel slide, with double stack capacity. Seems about right however after some guidence from this forum, I am seriously looking at a 3913 single stack. After veiwing the Lady Smith frame profile I prefer the larger dust cover. Still looking and considering.

You can not go wrong with a 3913 or a 3914 and for DAO only a 3953
think I have it right. The 3913/14 have a following, Awesome CCW
first round DA/follow up SA they are only single stack but they digest everything fed to them with wonderful accuracy. Fixed sights but ounce you shoot one and carry it for a while you will not regret it. Try a search and read all the threads. You will not be sorry if you acquire one it will lead to a second, Oh I forgot the 908 is the economy version of the 3913?

Ditto on the 6906. If you want to try the DAO version look at the 6946.
