I'm no gunsmith, so I don't understand all of the flap concerning the internal lock mechanism. I know what it does, but does it affect the integrity of a large-caliber revolver such as the 460V? Thank you one and all for provided feedback.

It is a non-functional organelle.

Every new gun comes with a cable lock.

My complaint about the IL is a purely aesthetic one.
The look of the lock itself is annoying enough to my eye, but what it necessitated doing to the lines of the revolver frame itself is what really annoys me. It changed the classic lines of the S&W revolvers into overly bulky-looking beasts.
I realize I suffer from an acute case of "engineer eye", but I simply can't get over the new curve (or lack thereof) of the frame along the hammer.
Then of course there is the argument about an unnecessary extra layer of complexity. One more thing to potentially go wrong.

Sorry guys and gals, you all will never convince me.

I smell another modern Smith and Wesson troll thread here.

Why don't you folks spend more of your time in the "61 to 80" section of the forum?

I'm convinced there is a lot of self-serving business going on here hoping to increase the conceived value of each of their older S&W gun collection. Each model and year has its own intrinsic value and, as always, all used guns are only worth what someone else will be willing to spend.

Lastly in most reasonable cases, unless you are already independently wealthy, selling your P&R, hammer mounted fireing pin, exquisite bluing no lock Smith made back in 1960-1970's (even two or three of them) will not garner you the everlasting wealth you're seeking.

Enjoy what you have, shoot straight and have fun!

The concerns are that under heavy recoil there is the possibility of the flag moving up and locking up the action inadvertently.

Not only on the internet but in at least 1 gun-rag there has been a report of this happening

Happened to me with a 329pd. Removed lock and no problem. Having said that, I own six or seven steel revolvers with the lock and I do not worry about them. I leave the lock alone in my steel guns

It's aesthetically unappealing to the purists. As far as causing malfunctions, it's just not happening. If the IL really was problematic, the internet would blow-up with complaints and video documentation causing S & W to correct the problem.

Having pistols both with and without.... l just don't see the problem. With no reason to use the IL, if I have any keys they've found their way to the junk drawer.

What Lock?.... if you're talking about the Wind up mechanism and Key I have a question myself..... Ive Wound up that darn thing up 50 rotations and nothing happens...and By the way...wheres the Little watch face on the revolver?...looked everywhere, cant find it...is it under the grips?, seems a odd place to put a watch face.

Welcome aboard partner. Not trying to be a smart aleck, but why don't you just do a forum search on the word "lock"—you will have days of reading material and your every question will be answered for you. Seriously...

The op is new to this forum and may be new to forums in general and not know anything about search or how to use one.

DrDoctor, this topic has been discussed ad nauseum as you probably figured out by now. There is a search button at the top of the page. Just click on it and key internal lock into the space provided hit go and you can read more than you want on the internal lock and see why these IL threads usually end up closed. Welcome!

Well excuse me .... the pre-lock does indeed have a more sweeping cut around the hammer ... and perhaps other desirable traits.....
