revolver shooter needs semi-automatic recommendation

My 2 favorites handguns are a 1911 in 45 ACP and the N Frame Smith in 44 Mag and 45 ACP...

If you just cannot "do" the 1911, and want a 9mm, get a Glock 17.

In my experience the Beretta "D" models, 92D for 9MM and 96D in 40 S&W, are best for revolver shooters wanting to transition to the auto pistol. The guns are totally reliable and, with all the police trade ins, you can usually find them dirt cheap. The 92D takes standard M-9 military magazines too. Triggers are dead smooth and there's no useless safeties to fuss with.

well i'm all mixed up and a little upset at Hoptob for pointing a Colt at me LoL. any how i don't know whats best but heres my experience with a couple of autos.
i was issued a 6946 and shot the hell out of it w/o a single mishap over about six years. it was almost compact and very accurate. a little thick and the finish was not so durable for all it mattered. i liked that gun.
recently it was taken from me and they gave me a M&P40. it feels better in the hand hasn't missed a beat yet (i only qualified on it once so far, and haven't been shooting much lately i'm embarrassed to say) i heard guys saying their M&P's get rusty in various places though i haven't had this experience. it is if anything more accurate than the 6946 and though a more powerful round feels about the same recoil wise. i like it pretty well and will like it more and more as it proves reliable
i have a glock 27 that i have carried right up against my skin for about ten years now, the brass snaps in holsters have been eaten away, the holsters have come and gone but the gun is still like new other than a few shiney spots, no rust, no hangups or hickups, not as precise as the smiths and the recoil can be a bit snappy but it carries like a j frame and best i can tell is unrustable. the 9mm G-26 would be lots more comfortable to shoot. guys in my dept with the compact M&P's really likeum i will be interested to see if the rust thing becomes an issue and was there something about the mag releases letting mags go? that may have been only with our holsters...
anyhow Good luck with whatever you decide.
Regards,
Rich
