I was recently at an auction where a revolver was described as being kept in a leather holster, and the gun looked pitted and in poor condition. The reason I noticed it I have a H & R Sportsman like the auction piece and I keep mine in its leather rig. I also keep my S & W Model 36 in a leather otw holster. Should I find another way to store these revolvers and if so what would you recomend?
Thanks for any advice. As always Good Shooting.

Get them the heck out of the holsters.

Ask me how I know.

Leather has various acids in it, tends to ATTRACT, and hold moisture.

It's the worst material in which to store a gun.

If I am not using mine, they are cleaned, waxed (Renaissance wax), and stored on clean print paper. No covering of any kind.

The reason for not keeping a gun holstered in leather for long term storage is that the leather attracts atmospheric moisture. If your home is airconditioned, or you only have moderate humidity in your climate, it won't hurt anything. I keep mine in purpose-made zippered gun rugs, and alternate with keeping it in the holster so the holster won't shrink.

In addition to the moisture issue, the tannic acids used to finish the leather can wreak havoc on the finish. For long term, store them out of the holsters. I have left my edc gun in it's holster for a week at a time, but for long term, it's wiped down and in the safe.
