Alright, I've just spent a large part of my afternoon doing some research. Not real familiar with the ways & means of tracking pending legislation, it probably took me far longer than it would have taken many of you more scholarly fellows. Here is a link to the text of Bill HR 1022, also known as the "Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007". It is being revitalized, amended, and revized. Despite the 'short-name' of the AWB of 2007, this text is of the current proposal in the House. If you read the heading & subheadings at the link (The Library of Congress' website), you'll see that this is indeed an active piece of proposed and debated legislation. The stated purpose is, "To reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes."
Bill Text - 110th Congress (2007-2008) - THOMAS (Library of Congress)
In the text, you will see a list of the currently identified "assault weapons", as well as the provisions for more to be added. Of particular importance is the definition of a "pistol grip".
"`(42) Pistol Grip- The term `pistol grip' means a grip, a thumbhole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip." Yes, this DOES include the grip-portion of your rifle & shotgun's buttstock!
Furthermore, you need to realize how many of your current handguns have been used by the various U.S. Federal Forces ( both military & police), as they, too, are deemed to be 'assault weapons'. There is also an important need for a "sporting purpose", although such a purpose does not exist simply because the firearm is being used in a sporting event!
Yes, your revolvers, grampa's old 03/A3 with it's original handguard, and even your dad's favorite duck gun are included.
Please; before anyone writes a scathing rebuttal to my post, please go to the link and read it. It's less than a full page, as it only contains the REVISIONS to the older version of the AWB. It was introduced in the 110th Congress, it's still alive, and the 113th Congress (commenced on January 3rd) is still entertaining it!
