Has anyone tried a Rock Island Armory 1911? I bought a full size and a compact. I have shot both and they have been flawless even with my questionable reloads. They feed FMJ and 200 gr. SWCs. equally well. I have been very satisfied. I replaced the grips but no modifications.

I bought the Tactical a couple years ago. Like your experience, it has run flawless with all ammo and brands I've tried. Ball and 4 different HP defense loads.
They can not be beat for the money.

I bought a plain Jane Govt model about 4 years ago for around $325.00. Swapped the magazine and changed the grips a few times and have had WAY more fun with it than I paid for.

One of my main shootin' buds has several of them and one he had souped up for competition (which he usually wins). He laughs at folks that buy the high dollar Kimbers and Wilsons etc. His "Rocks" will out shoot 'em all or so he claims. I've seen his targets and the difference between the stock Rocks and the rocked Rock in small, very small. I am thinking that it is about the best bang for the buck (sorry) going in hand guns. Just my 2 cents...

I bought a compact model to use the frame for a CCO style build, i.e., commander slide on a compact/officer's frame. I used a Colt enhanced Combat Commander slide and Storm Lake .38 Super barrel on the unmodified RIA .45ACP compact frame. The gun has been absolutely reliable. I did get rid of the grips; they were the ugliest wood grips I've ever seen on a gun and replaced them with Alumagrips thin grips.

A few years ago I saw a 4" 15-3 in a LGS display case. I walked out to the car and got my G-22RTF and traded it for the 15-3. That left a $200 store credit. In the case was a used RIA 1911-A1 in about 90% condition. I gave the man $75 and took it with me.

From the word go that RIA shot like it was a thoroughbred race horse! In January of the following year a kind fellow offered to tweak it for me a bit. Three months later, the pistol came back. It is today the most accurate 1911 pistol I've ever owned except possibly a Colt 1911 that I had back in 1990. The RIA will keep all its shots inside 4" or less fired from a two hand hold using plain Jane 230 gr. FMJ ball. It feeds all domestic ammunition and as well it feeds Wolf steel cased ammunition with equal perfection. I have with ball ammo used this pistol to repeatedly hit a 5 gallon plastic bucket on the other side of a pond which had to be over 100 yds. across. Hitting a 5x5 steel plate at distances of 30 yds. is simply not a problem. I am working on being able to do this out at 50 yds. The barrel is OEM as are all the other parts other than the trigger. The barrel bushing is a Kart that the gun smith fitted. The sights are adjustable Millet's. I find them extremely easy to use.

I've got two. A Match model that I picked up from a friend NIB and used in IDPA for about a year. I also picked up a Tactical model last summer. Both run fine with 230 grn FMJ. The Match is tight. I still have to use a mallet to help remove the barrel bushing. BTW, I'm not a big fan of the new logo. Other than that, for the $$, they are pretty good. Another BTW, STI uses Armscor slides and frames for the Spartan line.

I have the 3 1/2" compact for nearly 5 years now. Has been great. I did install a beavertail grip safety and enhanced sights as they weren't included back then. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Wait until you see their 1911 in .22 TCM caliber.

Bought a RIA 1911 a few years back. Nothing fancy, just the basic 1911-a1 version. Found it to be well made, and accurate, as well as reliable. Liked it so much, I made a set of stag grips for it, and later mounted a Burris holographic sight on it. Shown with a Kimber Target model.

The guys on the Shooters Forums gave it a thumbs down but--I still plan on buying at least two of their WWII G.I. Mil Spec .45s.

I wanted a Rock Island GI model for a long time and I liked everything about it except for the tiny, authentic GI sights. The Metro Arms American Classic GI gun looked exactly the same but had better sights and I heard it was a little better finished inside so I bought it, new for only $375 about 8 months ago. Best value gun I have ever bought.

i have a compact that is my everyday carry choice, have a kimber ultra carry2 that my wife got me for an anniversary gift and that dang ole rock island shoots better than it does, but as stated they have the UGLIEST grips known to man,

I'm being tempted by a Rock Island at the local Gander. Standard GI model seems pretty nice. I'm trying to decide between it and the Tisas 1911 that Bud's police supply has.

Bought one a few years back. Paid $350 for it. I had a guy do a great action/trigger job on it for me. Smoother than butter. Installed a target trigger, target hammer, and a set of Pachmayr grips. I later gave it to my son-in-law.

My son-in-law loves the gun. It's an amazing shooter. Says he's never getting rid of it. I guess that means I won't be able to talk him out of it. (Sometimes I do foolish things in the spirit of sentimentality.)

I've been thinking seriously about a Compact. Couple of questions:
1. Is the frame steel or alloy?
2. Will it feed 200gr± target wadcuters?

RIA XT22

I bought one of the XT22's. A great gun. Excellent fit & finish, worked flawlesssly. The next day, I decided the slide was too long, so I whacked it off.

That made the barrel too long, so , I whacked it off & threaded it.

then I re-installed the front sight

touched up the end of the slide

Now the darn thing looks like this

They probably make 'em this way now.
