One day a very wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country for the sole purpose of showing his son how it was to be poor. They spent a few days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

After their return from the trip, the father asked his son how he liked the trip. “It was great, Dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah,” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “It showed me just how poor we really are.”

The richest man is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least.

If you are happy with what you already have, rather than always wanting more, more, more, then you are truly wealthy.

Edit to add: Obviously S&Ws are an exception to the rule. I'm very happy with all the ones I have. One more would always be a good thing, of course.

"If you are happy with what you already have, rather than always wanting more, more, more, then you are truly wealthy." Does that apply to Smith & Wesson firearms, too?

'whom needs the least'... That should be a Proverb!

I never associated Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Tweeter and the Monkey Man, but, of course, Petty was part of the Traveling Willburys. Looks like he was instrumental in writing the song, too.

My wife and I used to recreate with another couple. the wife was a bitter human who always wanted more out of life. They did not live poorly and seemed to go pretty much every weekend to somewhere.
She was quite envious of wealthy people and claimed just once, she would like to experience how much fun the rich had.
I tried to explain to her that rich people did not recreate in the same way us redneck blue collar types do. They don’t actually have any more, and usually less fun than we do. Just that their fun is done at a different level.
She refused to accept that thought.
We quit running with them shortly thereafter. I won’t burden my life with negative and bitter people.

The best fishing I ever did was as a kid on a small creek in South Texas with a used/battered 12 foot johnboat, home-made trotlines, bricks/rocks/pipe for weights, and seined bait. Oh, the paddles were 1x6's crudely cut into paddle shape because my Dad and I couldn't afford real paddles.

I appreciate the story and its moral but if the farm family owned that land with the crops and creek and all, they are not poor. Perhaps the farm family is satisfied in other ways than material gain.

The rich urban father could take his child outside their walls to see truly poor people without homes or property if he dares, or perhaps talk with their "servants" to better understand poverty.

Some people think you have to go "first class" or not go.

I am not rich nor poor.

Which guy are you?

A. Guy who wants a brand new boat, Saves and scrimps for years to get it.

B. Guy buys a older used boat that is a bit under powered and spends years fishing in it.

C. Guy realizes a boat is acronym for "break out another thousand", buys more firearms
