RIP Frederick Forsyth

RAF pilot, spy, and author of The Day of the Jackal passed today. He wrote some great stuff, and some of the movie adaptations were pretty good, too.

He was Clancy, before Clancy came out. Of course he had a British slant to much of his work. Without a doubt one of my favorite writers!

The man certainly left his mark.

The Odessa Files and The Devil's Alternative are my favorite novels by Mr. Forsyth.

In the last chapter of The Devil's Alternative, you're thinking you have it all wrapped up with a pretty bow, then you turn to the last page and it stands the entire book on it's head. I had to read it several times before it finally sunk in.

Forsyth 's books often were the precursors to the "techno-thrillers" of the late 1980s. Being a gun guy, like all of you, I especially enjoyed one comment from "The Dogs of War," when the mercenary is buying 9mm ball to feed the MP40s they have bought. The arms dealer asks how much do the mercenaries need. The reply: "250,000 rounds." Dealer: "That's not very much..."
