Mark Volman, founding member of The Turtles.

Went to a dance in Pismo Beach in 1966, if I remember correctly (maybe it was 1967), where they were the band. No concert...just the Turtles playing the dance. I took our high school Homecoming Queen to that dance. I was surprised that someone of her caliber would even go out with me. I mean, I still had oat straw behind my ears. What really impressed me that night, if I remember, was their drummer, Johnny Barbata. He was amazing. Died last year. May they both rest in peace.

This and as a member of The Mothers of Invention is how I first knew of him as my older siblings were big fans. Only later did I learn Mark & Howard were also The Turtles!

Its only now that I learned about this guy. What an artist. The Turtles never meant anything to me, but his connection to Zappa piqued my curiosity and led me to check out Flo and Eddie. That's some fun, clever rock and roll.

I just saw the Turtles perform at the American Music Theatre in Lancaster, PA. They put on a great show.
