Letter came back on the RM today. Guys ask if a letter is worth it. This one shipped with a 5" bbl but has a numbers matching 7.5" bbl. The letter confirms it was done at the factory and the invoice is available from SWHF. As a bonus it was ordered by the Chief of Elgin Illinois PD and shipped to the PD. In this case the letter helped. But even if it didnt it would give me details not available elsewhere and it supports maintaining the history.

Great gun and a very fun and informative letter. In my opinion, ALL Registered Magnums need an historical letter to help "support [and] maintain the history"

Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

I bet that is the only RM that was sighted in at 75 yards with 38 special ammo & a 6 o'clock hold! That seems unusual.

I believe there is one example that was sighted in with .38 Special...at 200 yards! Must've been extra work traveling to the rifle range to zero that one, and no mention of groups obtained. ;)

Mine was sighted in at 100 yards with .38 Special wadcutter ammunition with a dead center hold. I wonder if anyone has done a statistical analysis of the data of the distances and holds Registered Magnum revolvers were sighted in at?

I have been digging but without much result. Elgin PD has a little history posted. Cant find anything on JJ Elgin. Once I get the SWHF documents hoping they will add clarity.

In addition, his name was J.J. Elgin, same as the town's name...I'm guessing there was more significance there than shown......Ben

Thanks for the update Gary. All of the information in your post #1 has now been added to the S&WCA Pre-war .357 Magnum database.

Gary,

That's some great history and a rare barrel length as you know. Good for you

Al

I wish it was shipped with that bbl But a factory barrel swap with invoice is next best.

Here is a couple pics the Elgin PD sent me.
