I was looking through an older magazine and seen an article with RMR sights on an M&P via Bowie Tactical. It's like 185 bucks to mill the slide and the sights are like 500. I know a lot of you will say, "spend that on ammo and practice.", but I'm just trying to figure is it even needed? What would be the benefits, especially on a close range defensive gun? Is this something you'd get on a target pistol? Just want everyone's opinions, but within topic..

Thanks.....

I have tested an RMR equipped M&P and I have to admit it was fast and accurate. I was impressed even though I went into it expecting not to be. Put the dot on your target and pull the trigger, pretty simple. The sight is very rugged and durable and melds nicely into the slide. As time goes on we will see more and more red dot sight systems for handguns and I am betting this is the future. I see Safariland is now making (pre-production) an ALS duty holster for Glocks & M&P's with the RMR system in place. That is very telling in my book.

I would not attempt to give commentary on a "defensive" gun, but from a target shooting perspective, a dot sighted gun is so much easier to shoot well, fast, its almost like cheating.

mlk18, is it worth the cost to have this modification made? Would it be cheaper to get a CTC grip with the same results? Trying to get an idea.... Thanks.

I think the red dot sights are vastly superior to lasers, but that is based a lot in personal preference. It costs about $200 to get your slide cut for an RMR or you can buy the dovetail mount that uses the existing sight cut but does not allow for co-witnessing iron sights. The sight itself is going to run $400-450 and is as one of the sturdiest and most durable red dot sight ever made. I think service in desert warfare has proven that a quality red dot sight is a viable tool in serious combat situations. It all comes down to your pocket book I guess. Personally I am saving for an RMR and will be sending my M&P to Bowie Tactical Concepts for a RMR cut and BUIS.

I've played about with one. Once the cool factor wore off you start to think of why you would need something like this? To this day I can't think of one reason why I would need this on a C.C gun.
