Rolex can stick it!!!

Im new to this site and wow you guys are rough on the lawyer. I bought my first Rolex around 1985 and finally had to send it in as the seals went bad and I got condensation from diving with it. About $300 to overhaul it. In 2003 I bought another, a Sea-Dweller and it's almost ten years and not a problem. Also it went from a $3800 watch to now appraised at $8500. My co-worker that I bought the first one from told me remember when people ask why you have a Rolex, it's "Pride in Ownership" period. Like guns, cars, motorcycles etc. I'm not wealthy just buy carefully as in what weapons I buy. Personal satisfaction

My mistake, my newer Rolex is the Submariner, the older one was the Sea-Dweller for what it's worth.

He gives as good as he gets ;) And welcome to the forum.

I'm not giving anyone grief over a rolex. If I wore a watch it would be what I'd try to wear.

The last tread of Cajunlawyer's I read was about a Troybilt trimmer. So apparently he's doing his own yard and buying nice things with the money he saved. That doesn't seem too uppity to me, if you see a lawyer around here doing yard work it's to satisfy community service hours.

I enjoy the banter and there's a wealth of info that is really interesting. A little of everything, seems like a great light hearted group who are always ready to help.

Is $8500 a typo? $5000-$6000 is more like it, depending on condition. Still great appreciation. Congrats.

Thank you everyone for a good laugh! I will be honest - I was checking for new threads and caught the title. Now, being an old fart - I just assumed it was about Rolex Vitamin Supplements!

Turn it into a pocket watch and spend the strap money on another revolver. . I've been making do with my old 18 size Walthams and no worries over a busted strap. . Sometimes I misplace the winding key, but I have spares. . Oldest is 1866 and still tick'n. .

I called Rhode Island a few weeks back and spoke to the Swavroski Rifle Scope folks and told them one of my 1991 scopes had a cracked adjuster. Took about a week, but two new ones showed up in the mail. Postage paid and no charge. .

I used to dive more and as a present to myself when my employer of 12 yrs eliminated my position I bought a Sub. Worn it every day @ 15 years now. Adjust it once a week or two. Never serviced.

Figure it has now cost me penneys a day to own. And I can still get good money if I want to sell it.

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice.;)

Well down here we're so strapped for money in the court system that we have to bring our own weed whackers with us for community service! :D Otherwise we have to take turns using the swing blade!

Maybe you could get one of your customers to give you a gator permit and go catch your own watch bands -- You should be able to get a lifetime's supply offa just 1 gator :)

I just like revolvers better than watches. So I don't own watches that cost more than revolvers. I sure won't own one that costs more than my motorcycles. They won't keep time any better than my cell phone.

well. in the old school thought, "men were judged by their watch and their shoes"

and since this is not the "dress for success" crowd, not that there is anything wrong with that, i'll offer my 2 cents

probably could get into a new band for under $100, all you need to know are a few measurements ~~~ i've done this multiple times for myself and friends ~~~ if crossbanding, i've had the logo polished off and their initials engraved on the latch, another nice touch

wore a mid 70's tudor chrono everyday for over 30 years and it took a beating and really stymied the watch crowd ~~~ most had no knowledge of tudor, but basically a rolex daytona, only the tudor was a auto-wind and the rolex was a self-wind

i'd be happy to help and am familiar with rolex bands

One by one all my watches died except one(even the pre-war Benrus with an 18K band, that was the cause of many a girl's death painting on the green radium #'s.) When I need the time, I whip out my $15 "flip phone" and it gives me the exact right time. When the battery won't hold a charge, I pull the sim card and pitch the phone. Don't bust the barrister's stones. CL is part of the 1% that proves not all lawyers are 4th sphincters, even with the fancy watch. Joe

I can't stand wearing a watch. For some reason, the wrist band just bugs me. On that note, about 20yrs ago, sis went to a police auction and bought a bunch of watches; mostly Seiko and one Longines. I dug it up from the back of the closet and looking at it now. I once wrote the company along with a picture but they did not have any info on it. Its a gold dress watch I assume was made in the 70's with four diamonds on the face and 10K RGP Bezel (whatever that means). Playing with it, I broke the dial 'thingy'.

Oh well, it's goes back to closet.

I don't wear wristwatches. I started as a LEO in 1969 and had three (including a fake Rolex that kept very good time) of them ripped from my wrist during several confrontations in the first few months on the job. Another item that is vulnerable during a social engagement is the police badge. I've had several torn from my shirt over the years but I still wear one of them for now but will probably quit in a few more months. I used the police radio, the patrol car clock if it had one, or one of the local banks or other businesses that displayed time and temp until the advent of the cell phone which I use now. I've got an old gold plated pocket watch that was presented to my great grandfather for some reason over a hundred years ago. It keeps good time. I get it out and wind it up and check it every now and them. I may wear it when I retire but I'm gonna have to get some overalls and a watch chain first.

That does seem kinda steep for a band, even a Rolex.
My Dad bought one in the mid '80s. He was SO proud of it. Would just sit and look at it. He died 18 years ago, and it lives in Mom's safe. I had an investigation a few years back in which I was posing as a high roller looking to invest a bunch of money with a shady businessman. Had to meet with him wired for sound, so I had to look the part. I asked Mom if I could wear Dads "Rolly", as he called it. She agreed, so I took it to the local jeweler he bought it from and had them take about a half inch out of the band. (Dad had much bigger wrists than me). Guess I'm glad I kept that part, looks like it's worth at least a hundred bucks.

There was a thread about tune-ups for Rolex's costing over $500. I was in that jeweler this week and they said they are about $300 there. Bad part is they no longer sell them. Only Des Moines in Iowa still carries Rolex's. This store is almost 100 years old, and had them for years.:( Dad would not be pleased.

Someday, Dads Rolex will probably be mine. I will rarely wear it, as it's just too valuable. I have a nice Tag Heuer my parents bought me 25 years ago and my Dad's Hamilton Automatic he got when he graduated high school in 1956. It keeps lousy time, but I usually wear it on Sunday to church. Otherwise, my Timex Indiglo is my every day watch. Keeps better time than the Tag or the Rolex, and it lights up! I gotta wear a watch. I think in that respect I'm in a minority, and that's kinda sad.

I never understood the Rolex thing.

I prefer the Fortis Spacematic. If it's good enough to go into space, deal with relativistic Lorentzian transformation time shifts, and deal with blastoff g-forces, it's good enough for anything earthbound. And it keeps great time.

Besides, I'm just as likely to need it in space as I am at 100 meters depth. The band apparently holds pretty well at Zero-g too. I'll report back after the next shuttle mission...
