I’ve worn out my Wheeler brass and steel punches, either bent or peened the most-used ones. What’s a good brand to replace them with? Amazon has a bunch to pick from. Local stores only sell Wheeler.

Are the “starter punch” types worth getting - the ones with the small rounded end?

Brownells is your best bet. In my experience, starter punches are just short, stubby versions of "regular" punches. Especially with smaller pins, they're less likely to bend when breaking loose a tight pin. You finish up with a regular punch. You won't know if you needed one until after you bend a punch and wind up scratching your work.

I got a no name set on e-bay. The smaller ones bend very easily I don't know if the name brand ones are any better. Have you considered grinding the ends?

While Starrett & Brown & Sharpe make the BEST precision tools, I am unaware of them making a Roll Pin punch set. When I purchased one years ago I could not find a set from either manufacturer and so I purchased a Brownell's set. Off hand without heading downstairs to my Workshop, I don't remember the brand, but they are made in America and are reasonably well made - at least for us amateur GS's. They come in a red and clear pouch.

I have been through several sets of craftsman. The small ones bend easy
and I never use the big ones. A buddy gave me some industrial grade that
are black and have short punch nose. I think they are Apex. They don't lip
or bend. I use them for starter punches. Like screw drivers I have been through all the gun name brands too.

You might get a cheap set..............

Heat the tip and quench it in oil, to temper the steel.

I have a cheap Harbor freight punch that is like a Timex........
