What say ye? Good combo or no? Got a round butt 629 w/6.5' barrel.
Looking for recommendations/opinions. Show me your long barrel round butts!

Only have two round butts with longer barrels that still wear RB grips. All the other 6-8 inch round butts wear round to square conversions.

627-0 5.5”
610-1 6.5”

I have never understood the idea of using any type of grip/stocks that are smaller at the bottom than at the top on a revolver that kicks a bit. It makes no sense to me. The idea is just an invitation for the revolver to wedge itself out of your grasp under recoil, thus requiring you to reacquire your proper shooting grip on the gun. That’s how it works for me, anyway.

I guess finger grooves are intended to mitigate that tendency, but I have never seen a finger-groove grip that I liked or thought was effective. Can the combats be pretty, sure. Feel nice in your hand, sure. But lousy at helping me maintain my grip and manage recoil. I’ve got no use for round-butt frames on S&W revolvers on any model except the short-barrel J- and K-frames. My humble .02. :)

Just my opinion but I think RB's look weird on a gun that has a barrel of 4" or more. I have a 629-3 with a RB but it wears RB to SB conversion grips. I would like it more if it had a SB and my grip options would be better

Although I draw the line at 5”, I agree the longer barrels look and handle better with sq butt conversion grips. The heel of a square grip gives a little extra leverage.

I agree if you need a round butt the N frame is too big for you.The worst decision the factory made was to turn the N frame round and K to allow more after market grip options.

Well thanks to all for your input. Seems the consensus so far is long guns need square stocks and I don’t necessarily disagree. Most of the new S&W offerings are round butt of course, so it is what it is I guess. One more question. How about round to square butt combats? I see this type stock on K frames mostly, but how do they perform on the long barreled N frames?

Consensus or opinions.....???? :)

IMO, what works is what works.... I have some long barreled guns that look great with RB grips.... and I have short barreled guns that has SB grips....

Then again, when it comes to J frames, any grip that double the size of the gun makes no sense to me....... (just my opinion :) )

Well how about consensus of opinions? LOL! Your opinion is as goods as anyone's and I don,t find it wrong. This is my first RB N frame and while I don't dislike the RB I just think the consumer should have a choice between the two. The RB to SB stocks can't be fitted to any of my other N frames so I want to try to get it right. I am used to the SB, but I thought that I might be missing out by not having any RB. All of my J frames are round but those are a different kind of animal.

You’d have to have fingers like bratwursts to fit those stocks. Pretty wood but a ridiculous design.

To buck the trend - I enjoy the factory slab sided Morado grips on my 6.5” 629DX. I find them quite comfortable and useful.

On the other side, with the greater apparent recoil of my four-inch 629 4”, I prefer roundbutt to squarebutt conversion grips.

Irrespective of another’s opinion, including mine, it is good to try more than one grip if the first feels unsatisfactory.

Wishing you best of luck, for comfort and aesthetics.
