Where some of the Model 19's made with a round butt frame? I'm talking about before the 19-5's. Let me know. Thanks, Elliot45

There were some round butt 4" special orders. IIRC; NCIS and maybe Treasury.

Putting a 4" barrel on a 2 1/2" gun was not an ''uncommon" modification in the 70s and 80s.......... I've got several 2 1/2 and 3 inch 19/66s.... would love a 4" round butt.

Some or all of the NCIS RB 4" Model 19's wound up at the FBI. They were issued to SWAT trained agents in the field offices before auto pistols were adopted for SWAT. I believe that was when the skinny barrel 4" Model 10 was still the issue revolver, before the 3" Model 13 was adopted.

I took a 2 1/2" RB 19 and had a 4" barrel installed in the '79 or '80. It was a nice revolver.

Why do you do this to me...............................The gun they should have made millions of ......not hundreds.

Just a silly 1/2 inch...................

Love my 3" 66s but man I would love to have a 3" 19 to carry!!!

Thanks for the responses, it definitely answers my question. Regards, Elliot45

Attached is a factory 4" RB 19-2 (K622) built on a leftover ONI frame.

There were also some early (K793) 4" RB 19-3's shipped to West Allis, WI in June, 1969 and some in the 1K53xxx range that went to H.H. Harris Co, Chicago, IL in October, 1971; to name a few.

... a bit of drift here, ...

I had a Highway Patrolman that shipped to a gun shop in West Allis, WI - which supplied it to the Wisconsin State Patrol. Wonder if the Model 19s you refer to were destined for the same end-user?

The letter didn't say who they were for but I am trying to find out.

You and squidsix mentioned ONI frames? I haven't come across that before.

They are mentioned on page 168 of the SCSW 3rd and page 218 of the 4th edition.

I have also read, "…Smith & Wesson received an order from the Office of Naval Intelligence (O.N.I.) for Model 19's with round butts and 4 inch barrels…set aside a block of serial numbers from K622xxx to K623xxx for the Navy's special order. These 4 inch barrel guns were completed in January, 1965. There was an over-run of round butt frames left from the Navy…"
