Good morning,

I am looking for a set of round but k/l frame grips I tend to not like finger grooves but like the look of the Altamont combats. These grips look like laminate, how hard would it be to reprofile theses grips to omit the bottom finger groove? I have never worked with laminate. I also like the look of the ahrends tactical round butt grips that don't have grooves, would that be a better option even though they are higher in price.

Thanks
Scooter

I'm generally not a fan of finger grooves because I have big hands and fat fingers, but the Altamont FG grips fit me better than most. If you can't handle a set to see if you can live with them as is, I suggest going with the smooth Ahrends.

You may be handier than me, but I've never been completely satisfied when with the results when I've attempted modifications like that. It also kills any future resale value if you decide to move them along.

Kim Ahrends makes a quality product and I think they're worth the extra cost. I don't know what his current lead time is, but they do have quite a following and are in demand. They occasionally show up in our classifieds and on the secondary market, so keep your eyes open.

For fingerless wood grips, I've come to really like Ahrends retro bananas. Here are two examples:

I order my Hogue grips without finger grooves. While these are N-frame revolvers, the same can be ordered for the X/L/X frame grip

Ahrends Retro Target do not have finger grooves either.
I purchased Ahrends Retro Combats , that's them on my N frame model58 avatar, because I liked the finger grooves.
Retro Targets are similar but without the finger grooves.
Ahrends are made with real solid wood not "laminate" aka plywood.

Or A single top finger groove.....

I don't have any of the Aherns........

My favorite grips and the only ones with 2 or 3 finger grooves that fit my medium/large hand are the Spegel Boot and Extended Boot grips.........

followed by the S&W Banana Targets..........

Hogue single groove grips ; but because of their length, only on 6" guns.

Some people love them, and some hate them but the Jerry Miculek grips have no finger grooves,

JM says he doesn't like finger groove grips because no matter how you design the grooves they only fit 20% of the population.

I have some Attends smooth grips and like them.

Is there any real difference in the tactical round butt vs. the retro banana grips? Does anyone have a major preference one way or another?

I'm using the Ahrends Retro Bananas on my 2 inch Model 64 and I love them. I'm not sure how much different the other Ahrends without finger grooves are but the Retro Bananas look and feel perfect for me.

Like others who have posted here, I don't care for finger grooves. They never seem to be in the right place for my medium sized hand.

Most of the Altamont grips are the "impregnated" wood, and can be re-shaped easily without needing re-finishng. They fit my hands well also. Especially the J Frame.

I have a set of the Altamont Silverblack Combats on my 66-2. they fit my hand well even with the finger grooves. I have slim hands with long fingers. Altamonts seem to work well for me.

Hope this helps!

Get the Ahrends. Real wood. Great fit. Much better quality and than Altamont. Spoken from experience not speculation.

S&W factory K/L Frame RB Target grips, aka bananas, look and feel great on blue, nickel and stainless revolvers.

They were available in both smooth and checkered variations.

In below attachments they are pictured on a 3" Model 66-2
