I avoided Ruger 10/22s for most of my life. Then when the take-down model first came out I decided it would be an ideal camping rifle and bought the first stainless one I saw. So far it's done everything I hoped.

Last week Ivan and I were in a LGS and they had a 10/22 in 22 Mag on the shelf. Ivan commented that he thought it was a little under priced. After I got home I checked completed auction prices on GB and discovered the rifle was several hundred dollars less than the going rate on completed auctions.

Today I was in the area and decided to bring the rifle home. I've not had a chance to get it to the range yet and looking at online reviews the magnums seemed to have a slightly spotted history. The one common thread I found is that people who like the magnums version say they require more cleaning than the 22LR version to function reliably.

Does anyone here have any experience with these rifles?

I've owned and built many 10/22's in .22LR with superb accuracy and flawless operation...My one attempt at the .22 Magnum version was not a success...Spotty accuracy and inconsistent reliability regardless of ammo...I did not try another one, so my experience may be a fluke...These experiences were several years ago......Ben

I had one for several years, accuracy was ok but nothing special. Probably could have been improved with a better trigger. Sold it when the prices got up to $900. A better one is the Magnum Research MLR-1722M but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Ruger if I found one at a good price although I haven't seen another for sale. Enjoy it.

I love a 22 mag semi auto carbine! I have a CZ and a BRNO and I just think it's a heck of a combination. If I came across a Ruger 10/22 mag priced well I would snap it up.

The ones I’ve had experience with were pretty reliable but like many 22 magnums they weren’t super accurate. They were plenty accurate for shooting coyotes and other pests and varmints, which I guess is what they are supposed to do. Of course I have never met a varmint I wouldn’t shoot with a 22LR that I would with a magnum and I tend to not feel that the gap between the 22LR and the 222 based cartridges is one that needs filled for my uses. Still neat rifles and a shame that the 17HMR conversion kits killed them off.

The rifle came with rings and I have an old Leopold 6X I plan on putting on after a good cleaning of the rifle. Hope to get to the range this afternoon to try it out. That will tell me if it's a keeper or trading stock.
