Another closet day at the range. Following an idea I got from robertwalsh a while back, I've been breaking out the old guns from closets I haven't shot in years. I've been impressed by all of them; I understand why I bought them.

Shot my old Ruger Standard Mark I bull barrel today. Trigger was way better than I remembered. Not like my M41, but very good. It's accuracy surprised me.

Loading the magazine (singular) was a pain. And it's 50 years old and kinda beat up. I want to get some new mags for it. So (finally), my question is, are all Ruger Standard Mark I thru Mark IV magazines the same? Do the different Marks require different mags?

Any recommendations for Mark I magazines?

Following. I’ve got the same question except mine is just the regular Ruger Standard .22 made in 79.

I don't know anything about IIIs and IVs, but I thought Is and IIs used different magazines. Is that right?

You are going to have to buy magazines specifically for the Mk I.
Here is an EBay seller I have trusted selling replacement Mk I magazines. They are the ones in the first photo with the plastic base and they are good to go in my Mk I Target; actually easier to load than originals.

The second picture shows original chrome-based Ruger Mk I magazines and a loading tool I bought on ebay that greatly assists in loading the older magazines; it will work with the replacements as well. Good luck.

When I bought my MarkI some 40 years ago I bought a second magazine. They are Ruger mags and are 9 shot. When the MarkII came out it was my understanding that they had 10 round magazines and were not interchangeable with the MarkI series. I think the MarkIII & IV can use the MarkII mags. I have seen original MarkI mags at gun shows. Good luck in your quest.

I bought two of the Italian Mec-Gar magazines for my Ruger Standard Model. The Standard Model frame is identical to, and magazines should work with, the Mk I. They hold 10 rounds, I have had no trouble with them. I have one original early Ruger magazine, and it does have problems. The follower spring is too weak to feed reliably. I think the Mk II magazine has the sliding loading button positioned on the other side, but the Mec-Gar magazine can be configured either way. Just switch sides for the button, very simple to do. But you should not need to do that.

In my Mk I the later magazines have the magazine catch fall into the joint between the magazine body and base. They are a real bear to remove at that point because you cannot access the magazine release easily.
I recommend Mk I magazines for Mk I pistols.

Ranch Products makes an enlarged magazine retainer and release catch which should ease removal considerably. I have considered buying one but so far I have not.

Yes, the only difference between SM/Mk I and Mk II magazines is the side the follower loading button is on. And I believe all those magazines have follower buttons that are reversible. I do not know about the compatibility situation regarding magazines for any other Ruger .22 pistol models.
