Ruger no 1 in 357 magnum CHP gun

#1? Single-shot falling-block RIFLE? In 357 Magnum revolver cartridge. California Highway Patrol?

I got no idea of the value. I just wanted to make sure we're on the same page.

Maybe a little high. I did a google search and you find them for sale and selling at around $1,000+/-. One source said they made 400 for the CHP association. Another said something like 1,800 were made. Either way a neat little rifle.

Alpo, we're on the same page. I googled it also but wasn't sure of the dates on some of the sales or listings on guns international. I think it would make a neat gun with open sights or scoped. Seems like Ruger no 1's are going up in price like all guns. Larry

A limited production model, I've seen several listed on GB. Seems
like I read a magazine article about the #1 in 357 magnum having
some accuracy problems due to long throating but I don't remember
details. I'd want to do some research before spending that much
money. Lots of #1s around in better hunting calibers for less money.

I could see a #3, maybe. #1 seems awful heavy for 357.

But then, it's a commemorative. Would not be toted around in the woods. Guess any caliber would do for that.

I was talking with an awesome sales gal at Wal-Mart when I went to purchase a box of 303Britt ammo. She knew her stuff about all guns modern and military. I could talk with her for hours about guns. But we talked about deer hunting. She just purchased a new marlin lever action in 357mag. She asked me my thoughts about it. With the 158gr bullets it should be the perfect deer gun. For a woman the recoil is manageable.

My thoughts are there good low recoil rifles in 357mag. Could become rare in a number 1?

It was nice to talk to a sales person at a Wal-Mart about guns who knew something. Back home I asked for some 303Britt ammO and the grumpy old man who runs the department snapped at me "THAT'S A MILITARY CALIBER!!!!" And we don't stock military ammo. I was going to snap back what's the 7,62x39 ammo doing on the counter there? But the old man was upset already and he probably needed his job so I didn't push it. In Maine she had tons of 8mm mauser and 303 Britt ammo.

With Ohio passing straight wall rifle hunting , I think we will see a rise in price of said rifles from the o.p.

Yep, it could be used for deer. It would be mostly a plinker, bowling pins at 100 yds off hand would be fun. Just bought a Martini cadet converted to .357 and nicely done. The Ruger would be another sorta holy grail piece. Like the action but hear they could be a good shooter or not so great. Hope someone that knows no 1's prices on this piece will chime in. Before I would use one of these guns for deer, I'd use the Marlin 1894 I have in .357. Larry

You can rechamber it to 357 maximum. I have a winchester 94 Trapper that I have rechambered and it is still accurate with 357 magnums and 38 spl. With mild maximum loads you can surpass 35 remington loads with a 200 grain bullet.

I looked at #1 357 about 10 years ago that had been rechambered to 35 Whelan. I passed on it because the rate of twist was not right for the Whelan.

Not to get off subject but I just picked up a H&R handi rifle in .44 for the Ohio whitetail and it's a tack drive at a 1/3 of the cost. Yeas I am aware you get what you pay for, but for a woods gun it will work just fine for me.

Ruger No. 1 .357 Magnum

Larry,

Just ran across this post and wanted to chime in.....

I was at a local out of the way shop last week and found this same gun brand new in the box and could not resist. Picked mine up for $950 out the door with tax.

From what I have been told by one of the top Ruger collectors, Ken Goodman, they only made 1800 of these, plus a few over runs that were NOT marked CHP (These are very rare indeed!). They were built in the early-mid 80's, I believe around 1984.

Ken says that I did real well on my price, these go for $1,100-$1,200 in excellent condition.

This was the only Ruger No. 1 offered in a pistol caliber......with the exception of one that was special ordered in .32 S&W Long, that was built for a military officer friend of Bill Ruger's. I know the owner of that gun, very rare!

Cheers,
Tom

Nice score Tom, see if you can post some pics before you go on your cruise. The one I'm watching is on gunbroker. It's in the single shot rifle section in the 357 area. It's at 1199.00 right now, I decided to pass on it. It closes on Sun. If someone wants it, go for it. Larry

Thanks Larry, I don't usually stray from my usual collecting to this type of rifle, but it was too good to pass up! Being there are only 1800......they can only go up in price from here.

Many years back I picked up an early, 1962 production, Ruger "Deerstalker" .44 Magnum Carbine. This is one of the first that were actually marked "Deerstalker" and have a bottom feed, like a shotgun vs. the rotary magazines that the newer versions came with. These early guns are bringing $1,200 plus in good condition.

Cheers!!

Tom

I have 3 of them #1 medium in 7mm rem mag, #1 International in 30-06 and a # 1 tropical in 45-70 they are pricey now. I think $1200.00 is alot of cash for a model #1 in 357 though. All that aside they are tack drivers. I bought them as I am southpaw rifle shooter.
