Rule: Always have a knife!

I have various knives of different sizes for different occasions. I am partial to Case and Gerber locking blades. My favorite is a 4" Gerber lockback my wife got me back in the mid 70s. It is a solid knife with really good steel.

Nice Buck. Is that one of the old ones, from the early '60's when the white handle substance split sometimes in really cold weather? Or a more recent one with white Micarta?

Looks like the Model 105 Pathfinder? One of those with black handle was my first Buck, and one of my first good sheath knives.

If yours is the old one, you may want to retire it and check collector prices. I think they're worth a bunch. The Buck Custom Shop will prob. make you one with white Micarta, and the current blades are easier to sharpen, too. This is NOT a suggestion to sell. I think that knife should be a nostalgic heirloom in you family. But it's probably too expensive to use, unless for occasional sentimental hunts.

Texas Star....
That info has come up a couple times on the Buck blade.
It is a 1987 year vintage.
The dern thing is near mint...maybe I should re-think it's use.

If it's that recent, it's probably a special run for someone or from the Custom Shop. Should be white Micarta, not the more fragile Melomene (?) stuff from the early '60's.

I carry one of about a dozen liner-lock folders. I refuse to have a folding blade without a liner lock because it's the safest to open and close with one hand, along with the Benchmade side-button design.

My favorite's a Buck Crosslock Solitaire. Mine's about worn out and like so many other things that appeal to me, it's out of production. So much for replacin' 'er.

When I'm out in the bush behind my place, I'm wearing one of a couple of Becker Knife and Tool things from back in their Camillus days, either a BK10 or BK 9 if I'm in a "sword wearin'" kinda mood.

Edited to add: If you can luck into one like I did, one of the U.S. military-issue Ontario machetes is an EXTREMELY stout and useful version of the machete. Nothin' like the ones the Mart sells. Overkill for usual woods-bummin' but heavy enough to replace a hand axe and way more versatile. Made of good knife-quality steel, too.

I loves me some cutlery.

Looks like PALADIN was onto something...

In the OP's remarks, he mentioned that he used a Lansky
Sharpener. I get a really sharp edge on my knives, but you know if
it's a good uniform edge or not. Mine are not, so I got a Lansky
Fold-A-Vee off my favorite internet site, and now have a sharp,
uniform edge.
Thanks for the tip. TACC1

I've carried a knife for years and years. I rotate them occasionally, but always use the Spyderco Sharpmaker to keep them sharp. Here is my latest EDC, a Combative Edge M1.

When I saw the title to this thread I had to chuckle. I always carry my Buck 301 in my pocket but the other day I was going through my range bag and my 91 year old father was watching me. I had the usual things in it, gun, earmuffs, several boxes of ammo, dad says, where is your hunting knife, never pack a bag without it! So in goes the buck hunting knife. I remember growing up as a kid whenever my brother and I would head out rabbitt hunting dad would say, "don't forget your knives, boys". Some things never change.

knife

i carry or have at my side a swiss army knife with a corkscrew and scissors included: always find myself reaching for it.
second carry is a microtech neck knife with serrated edge. have a buck 184 which goes in the car for travel and a custom red micarta handle 4" blade hunter for my belt.

T-Star,

Firstly, the juxtaposition of the large fb's with a pocketable Airweight, like the all-but-useless Nagant revolver with a useful Vic Farmer, was my attempt at humor. I did quiz several county deputies re fb max carry length - my favorite answer was, "If you can sit down and not do yourself an injury, it aint too long!". Of course, cities - like Birmingham - have far more strict regulations.

As to Solingen-made pocket knives, I have a few stag handled Puma slippies - mostly not carried as I am not fond of the blade steel. The Boker Tree Brand 'classic' slippies - in carbon steel - are great - now. I say now, because I bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker several years ago - and now can sharpen double bevel blades - at last! I had a drawer full of dull knives - mostly Vic SAKs, but even a pair of new Benchmades. All are finally sharpened - I don't fear using my knives now. In fact, I have become quite a knife-slut - now having quite an ecclectic mix of knives.

I do carry my last two Boker Tree Brand folders - a Haddock and a Titan Worker, the latter one seen below:

Buck 110's are a long time favorite here. While the $30 basic version from WallyWorld is a super knife, Buck has a custom shop that will make one 'to order' for you. Here is my last Buck Custom 110 - made for me for $84 delivered - S30V blade, nickel silver bolsters, and blue Dymondwood scales. Affordable perfection - with my latest S&W, a 3" 60 Pro:

Last fall, I commemorated my first SS retirement deposit by buying my most expensive knife - a special version of the CRK Umnumzaan, seen below with my great S&W buy of last year, a current PC627 UDR:

One thing is for sure - like my revolvers, there are no 'safe queens' in my knife collection - everything gets carried - or why have them? Knives are more affordable and there is no Fed 4473 to fill out. I am an unabashed knife-nut.
