Rule: Always have a knife!

If one is none, and two is one, then I had four on me a little while ago, since five is likely four. :) I have a Buck Stockman and a Buck 379 in my RF pocket, a Gerber medium Paraframe clipped to my LF pocket, a Buck 110 in my coat pocket, and a mini Leatherman in my backpack.

My old friend Bill had 3 rules.
The Rawls Rules:
#1. You kill it. You clean it.
#2. Carry at least one. When you need a knife, nothing else will do.
#3. Carry a belt knife. You don't have to open it.

#1 I first heard from my Dad. He phrased it; "Boy, you killed it,you're gonna clean it."
The knife is the most personal of all tool / weapons. And they carry a certain mystical quality with them.
It's easy to tell where you stand with me. I will loan a handgun to a close friend. Loan one of my knives? Maybe one person.
If I like you, I'll give you a knife in exchange for a coin. Without the coin, it will cut the friendship. Metal for Metal.
I can almost understand ladies and shoes. I'm the same way with knives. I have an ivory handled belt knife I wear only on formal occasions, weddings and wakes.

I have several, but most often have a little ProTech Stinger in my pocket. (This is very small but well made auto.) Weekends I like a Leatherman Wave on my belt. These have fairly good size standard edge and serrated blades that lock in place but can be easily opened with one hand. Buncha other tools, too. (But, alas, no corkscrew.)

I have had a Lansky set for, oh, 30 years. Not all that successful with it and have at times gone years without even using it. :o Recently I decided to read the directions, it being 30 years and all. What?! One is supposed to clean the stones after use?!

So, ahem, my question is: Can the stones be cleaned after all these years? If so, how?

I didn't know you couldn't carry a knife with a blade longer than 2 inches in Georgia. I guess I better turn myself in. All my buddies at work make fun of me for always carrying the biggest folders Spyderco makes. If you have ever used the jaws of life you know it will cut through A and B post like butter, but you better have a big knife to cut the wires and plastic trim on the inside of the car. I had a pt trapped by a plastic bumper couver a few weeks ago. Out came my knife and I cut the bumper cover right into. I would hate to try that with a 2 inch knife.

I always have one of these in my pocket. The Leatherman Fuse (top) is bladeless, so I can carry it where even knives are not allowed. The bottom one is a Leatherman Juice CS4.

I also have one of these on me when I can. From top to bottom: Emerson Mini-Commander, Emerson Mini-CQC-7BW, Benchmade Mini-Presidio. The Benchmade is set up for left-hand pocket carry; it's what I carry when I also carry a gun.

On those rare occasions when I'm restricted to a 2" blade, I carry this Spyderco Chicago.

As for sharpening...well...

Even the oldest, most well-used knife in my collection, the Mini-Commander, hasn't needed sharpening. I've used that to cut everything from packing tape, duct tape, and corrugated cardboard boxes, and it'll still cleanly slice a sheet of paper.

I keep meaning to get a sharpening kit, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I used to collect knives regularly and used a Lansky kit, but that had to be at least 12 years ago when I last sharpened a knife.

While not a knife, I also carry a Benchmade Houdini keychain that has a seat belt cutter, LED light, rescue whistle, and window breaker.

EDC is the Victorinox Super Tinker, depending on the tasks then it's the Leatherman Wave and when hiking it's the saw/knife combo. I have four of these Smith's sharpeners scattered around.

I seem to recall GA law was four inches for a concealed weapon, so belt knives don't count. The exception being three inch blades if they are committing certain felonies. What code section were you referencing, M1?

I envy the guys with the nice knives. There is no way I could afford to replace them at the rate I seem to lose knives.

My constant companion is a CRKT M16-13SF for emergency use. The flippers make it fast and the serrated portion makes it versatile. I also carry it left handed in case I need to use my right to protect my gun.

For general utility use, I prefer multitools. In uniform, I carry a Leatherman surge. The pliers and screwdrivers are used a lot. In casual clothes, I like a Leatherman Micratool. It disappears in my pocket, but the scissors, bottle opener, and screwdrivers are out at least once a day.

The console of my car has the standard Buck 110. Though it's about the third one I've owned over the years I still have the original sheath I bought back in the 70's, complete with turk's head a boatswain buddy did for me. Back in the day a 110 folder was almost part of the uniform of the day. The last ship & shore station I was on prohibited them. That was, of course, during the Klinton administration...

Got a couple different smaller folders that ride in my pocket.

I always have a Swiss Army Soldier in my pocket, and a Swiss Army Alox Classic on my keychain. I keep them sharp with Arkansas stones. Having a sharp blade is important, but having the other tools is icing on the cake.

A man after my own heart-everything you need and nothing you don't

On the chance that I'd be sent back overseas, I bought a Browning .380 and a "Baby", for $80, and a BUCK folder for about $7.
Didn't go, sold the pistols. I've had the BUCK pre-Folding Hunter since
'66, and just upgraded to a #110 Folding Hunter. Only needed the first
one on two occasions, but it was With me! The new one has a better
blade-shape, IMO, and it's got cute stuff written on it.
I've still got the FINE and REALLY HARD OUACHITA stones that I used on K-bars. TACC1

I have a hard time deciding on the 'right' knife & CCW... the 642 is a no brainer. But, which fb would be best, a Bear/MGC Damascus Bowie, a KaBar, or a Buck 120BR??

Okay, more realistic - for those days when only a 7-shooter is appropriate - one of my 1895 Nagants - and a Vic SAK - 'Farmer' - in blue ALOX:

In all honesty, that Farmer is a great pocket knife - and see's some definite carry. Lately, my main EDC knife has been a BM 755 MPR.

I have about a dozen folders (Benchmade, Kershaw etc) but always (100%) carry this Spyderco Tenacious - G10, thin and light even with it's 3+ inch blade - best $30 I have ever spent on a knife! Keep it sharp with my "sandpaper" sharpening system in the shop.

I have a few of these. Got turned on to 'em by an ex-deckhand buddy. When cleaning multiple feesh & ya need to freshen up the edge they just can't be beat.

I also use 'em to get a starting point on the wife's kitchen knives. Not sure what she's cutting up in there but I think it might be bolts or somethin'...

i carry a leatherman skeletool with me i used to carry a camillus u.s. knife but the knife blade and other tools on it got hard to open so i switched to the leatherman

t

the one i also carry along with p38 along with other goodies
was given to me from my dads brother after he passed away.

I always carry a folder and end up using it daily.

I don't really have any brand preference. I've collected a bunch of Kershaws over the years and love them.... but you can't do much man handling with them.

Currently I've been carrying a simple Winchester lockback. I found it in a sale bin at Gander Mountain for $5 a few years back so I bought five of them. It turns out it was a good buy. They are built well enough that I can abuse them all day and they just laugh it off.

On a sharpness scale of 1 to 10 I'd give it a 4. Not too sharp but tough. I like my knives to be able to pry if need be... and if I find a durable knife for cheap I'm happy. I don't want to be to concerned if (when) I mangle the blade.
