I have an old car that has some light rust in the drain areas of the trunk and hood. Can someone suggest a quality paint that I can brush in these areas to keep the rust from getting worse?

In the paint section of hardware stores, Duro Extend. At automotive store there is the same product for auto application in sprat cans. I prefer the brush on! This will be a primer coat and must be painted over to work properly.

Also take a look at POR-15. It is extremely popular with folks restoring old hot rods and cars. It is designed to be applied over rust, and seals the area, preventing rust from spreading any farther. After having several U-Haul It trailer hitches rust badly on several trucks, I used POR-15 on the new hitch I put on my 2006 GMC PU prior to installing it. 13 years later, the trucks frame and some of the body were shot to rust - the hitch still looked like new. I should have painted the trucks frame with it as well..

Another product called Chassis Saver is a product similar to POR15. Be advised that a small can goes a long way as it really brushes out. As said above all that’s required is to remove the loose rust. Oh, and don’t get it anywhere (like your hands, face, etc) that you don’t want painted. Once it’s dry it takes dynamite to remove it.

Well the best thing u can first do is clean and convert the rust before u do anything...
otherwise it will return
Use a zinc primer too
Then u can use anything u want within reason and the repair will not come back

Another vote for POR-15. It isn't cheap, but it is the best rust conversion/rust stopper paint I have ever seen. It is some seriously tough stuff.
