OCD or not, this looks like rust, but I'm hoping to be wrong and somebody would tell me so.

Note: I'm out of town and visiting family, and since my sister is not very gun friendly, I can't have it out and cary it like I can at home. As a result, my gun has been in a Nano Vault 200 for a week (and has another 8 days to go...) As a result, there is certainly cause for concern regarding rust. All I can do (and have been doing) is take it out once a day to wipe the moisture off.

Whatever this is, it has gold brownish tint to it.

That doesn't look like rust to me. Does it wipe off? It might be scuffing on the finish.

Yes, fortunately it did come off. After posting I used some CLP with a nylon brush — and that didn't work — but when I applied some CLP with a bore brush it came right off, with just a touch of elbow grease.

Now I'm just curious how it got there, and more specifically, how the marking in that particular direction was made, as it's not in the same direction that the slide rides on the frame.

wipe it down good and put it away. Check it before you get back on the road. If you don't have a scrap t-shirt and some gun oil, grab a silicone cloth at WM.

A confrontation about a pizza will destroy a 1000 mile visit to my sister's. A firearm? Don't even go there.

So you think it was rust, even though it came off rather easily?

I brought it because #1, I felt uneasy about leaving my gun at home where I would not be for an extended period of time, and #2, my brother in-law (who is also a gun owner) are going shooting tomorrow.

If it took a metal brush to get it off, then it was definitely rust.

Crud!!! With as meticulous as I am about caring for my firearms, I really don't know how I could have gotten rust and it makes me really angry!! I can only hope that it doesn't happen again, but I'll be worried sick over the next week — for no other reason than I don't have the money to replace my gun(s).

When I travel, particularly flying, and my handgun spends anytime at all in the metal Bulldog Vault, I do this.....

1. Spray the interior eggshell foam with a light coating of Birchwood Casey "Barricade".

2. Spray the same Birchwood Casey "Barricade" on a fine bristle shaving brush (not the same one you use for shaving) and wisk it around all over the handgun. The fine bristles carry the "Barricade" into every nook and cranny for complete coverage.

And that's it. Temps change in transport and so do the temps in that vault. Better to add a little prevention than worry about the rust after it's too late.

So, once you have rust, it's always a problem, right?

I don't personally think it was rust. It looks exactly the same as the wear on the inside top of your slide.

I have never seen rust in a straight line like that before unless it is in a contour, depression, etc. I'm betting it was a simple, minor "mar" and your efforts took care of it.

Often, these type of finishes can "mar" with something as simple as a brass brush or copper off a punch.
Do you use a copper or brass rod to hold your cleaning patches? I've had to use a elbow grease and a better cleaner like you did to get it off as well.

I think you are good to go.

Apologies if i am off on this but have heard foam in cases can hold moisture and certain oils can break them down during storage. Perhaps could the oil/finish the OP is using is somehow having a reaction to the liner in that vault?

Ralffers,

I don't know what the problem is, only suggesting short term steps based on the "unseen" parameter you implied.

Holiday warfare in my family is so ugly that the cost of a rusted and therefore useless piece of iron is nothing. I avoid it at all costs.

I don't know what it was, but it's very unlikely that it's rust. The Melonite treatment is extremely rust resistant. Also, if that part were going to rust, the wear spots inside the slide would show rust as well. As you can see, there's no rust in the slide.

QUICK, CALL OUT THE RUST POLICE AND LETS FORM A POSSE.

It's not where you store the gun but the change in temp and humidity that will form rust. Keep humidity down and store at constant temp. Guns left in cars will rust as they get hot during the day then cold at night. All that cold moisture gets contained in the foam.

Not in my experience. Stainless or blue, some protection like barricade or eezox and never had it return.

But then again these guns came to me used and rusted so I don't know what the previous owners did or didn't do.

You might want to look into a protective substance that shows better rust protection test after test (such as Froglube). I'm not selling froglube, you can use whatever you want, just make sure it is proven to protect the gun for extended storage. If whatever you were using shows signs of rust after only 1 week, I would never use it again.

Also, put a few Silica gel desiccant packs in with it to help keep moisture down.
