Rusty Internals?

Has anyone else ever had an issue with the internal lockwork on a S&W revolver rusting?

I have 638-2 which has less than 1,000 rounds and has always been cleaned. Since it's aluminum and stainless steel I never worried about rust.

However, when cocked and a light is shined in the internals, it looks rusty with some discoloration and spots.

Has anyone else had this problem? It appears to only be the hammer?

Is this common? I am the original owner, does S&W warrant against this?

The firearm is otherwise new looking.

Also, If I tear it down myself, can anyone recommend a good gunsmith screw driver and punch set as well as cleaning recommendations?

If you are noticing discoloration on the hammer, trigger, etc., that is the "case hardened" look. These are MIM but I believe SW does something to apply the old fashioned case hardened look. Lots of discoloration on the hammer and trigger, but normal.

When I got my 442 it was kinda stiff. It had been shot once then left in a drawer for 17 years. When I popped the side panel I found some surface corrosion and gunk inside. I took it apart, cleaned and relubed it. Works great now.

It could be lube that has turned a little dark, or it could be rust. Do you pocket carry or IWB carry? Either way gets the gun close to you and perspiration can get down into the interior. Stainless can rust, it is just more resistant to it. There are many different grades of stainless, and gun stainless has a certain amount of carbon steel blended in to make the machining better. Get some screwdrivers and clean and lute it.
