S and W 38 Special, anyone know the year?

Hello, my girlfriend inherited a S.W. 38 Special, 5 3/4" barrel length, serial #S 904879. All the serial numbers on the gun match, and it is in pretty good condition, wood on the grips looks to be original with no damage. Could any one help me out with the year of this gun and maybe a ball park value? If you would like a picture just let me know and I will get a couple on here for ya! Thanks much.

Probably 1947. Value is based on condition, but any decent .38 M&P ought to be at least a $250-300 gun. There are parts of the country where that gun might bring between $300 and $400.

Are you measuring barrel length from the muzzle to front face of cylinder? Those guns should not have fractional barrel lengths.

First off, welcome to the forum.

I'll add to the chorus that you post some photos of your Military & Police.

Other M&P's in the S904XXX serial number range have been documented as having shipped in April, 1947.
