S and W 638 questions

It seems to be hit and miss on some of S&W stuff. I just bought a NIB 442 with IL from my dealer (cause it was priced very well is only reason) and it seems to a better one from the factory. Box dated 01/2022 so we shall see. Best bet is to inspect anyone of the revolvers you are looking at really well from S&W ad pick you out the best you can find. My friend has a 638 and it has been great. I dont think I would buy one sight unseen, say on GB cause I would be upset if the one they sent me was not up to my inspection and the prices are starting to climb again from S&W I was told the other day when i bought the above 442.Good luck on your hunt..

Prices on used, but still lock models, is in the $450 range. NE FL Jacksonville. Which is more than the $399.99 I paid for mine in 2015. All used gun values have jumped back up locally.

Pure chance. Depends on the individual gun. My 638 purchased in 2011 (IIRC) has been reliable and was my casino go-to gun before the 340s arrived. OTOH, I inspected a 638 several years later and the hammer could not be fully pulled back by hand, perhaps a burr on the interior. Maybe that 'burr' would wear off under firing, but perhaps not. You can't have maybes on a carry piece.
Don't know if this means anything, but S&W produces a huge number of their Centennial pattern guns (442, 642, 340), to the point that I rarely see a 638 in a LGS. All you can do is carefully inspect, but the acid test is at the range.

to the OP, I just bought one a few minutes ago and the price tag said $499.00. I got it for $485.00 plus tax and it seems to be a very nice put together gun, which is why I opted to get it. Trigger is nice and everything is put together well that I inspected before buying. I will have you some pics here soon on mine. I think it was a 09/2021 manufactured gun per the label on the box.
