"S" prefix M&P going rate

Sorry, no pics. I found a near pristine M&P locally, but these are out of my comfort zone for valuation. Gun is 98% with faintest of turn line, grips number to gun, gold box is very good maybe 85%. Serial number is early in the "S" prefix range. What would fair value be ?

Since it's early in the serial does it have any pre war parts? Large ejector rod knob, grips, etc? That makes a difference in price.

What barrel length? The 2 inch is usually higher priced than the standard 4 inch. A 5 inch or 6 inch were also made. Price depends a lot on local values unless you list it on a national auction site or sell it here on the forum. Prices could range from $350 to $500 or so in many areas. Hope this helps

Well, Lord Sandwich, I find this quite odd. You say it is "early in the S prefix range" but then you say "no apparent prewar parts." I have more than 5 dozen accounted for in my database now and all of the "early S prefix" 4" and 5" examples have large knobs and patent dates, at least. I'm wondering what you mean by "early." Would you care to share the serial number with me? If you purchase this gun, would you please contact me so I can add it to my research? I'll have a list of questions and would also appreciate photos.
As to the value, I think the guys are right about the $500 ballpark, but the box might add to that a bit, especially if it is in good shape and numbers to the gun.

I haven't noticed the S prefix adding much or any to the price. Transitional or unusual features, yes, a little, not nearly so much as with n frame guns. Desirable S series feature (in my book) include: snub nose, half moon sight, round butt, long action hammer, sharp shouldered grips that number (or better yet pre-war grips) original nickel, a gold box. I saw a gun with most of these features sell for $800 at a local auction to a well-heeled collector.

The high S-series SNs, above about S990184 will have the new short action, or most of them will. That's the real transition in the S-series. Earlier ones will have the old long action and most will have the barrel-type ejector rod tip.

Hello JP, I did not know anyone was collecting data on the SV's. This is one I got a year ago or so... Long action shipped in March of 1946 to Tryon Co in Philly. Serial SV810309.

I believe most, if not all, the postwar commercial SVs had plugged lanyard loop holes in the butt. That was because those frames were originally made for military purposes. Those SVs shipped for commercial sale in early 1946 that I know of have SNs that run from approximately SV 770xxx to SV 813xxx. The range may run a bit wider on the low end.

Yes, DWalt. And some of the earliest S numbered guns also have the plugged lanyard hole. I hope to eventually identify the approximate number when this stopped.

I have one with a ser. just short. Of 852xxx without the plugged hole if that helps. It's a 4", vitually new in its numbered box, with literature and cleaning rod/brush. I believe it was mfg. in 1946.

Mine, an ex leo's 4" revolver, has the lanyard ring, sn S_8572xx. . It's long action, large ejector knob, one line address.

The Lanyard ring hole is in the middle of the butt with the letter S on the left side with the last 3 numbers to the right. . The full s/n is stamped on the flat of the lower grip frame.

I too have a SV series gun. It is serial # SV770689. It has a 5" barrel. I also have a S series serial number S844521 with a 6" barrel.

A couple questions to assist in my research: Are there patent dates on the top of the barrel? Are the retaining washers stamped blued metal held on by rivets?
