I started compiling a similar list of S&W shipping dates about five years ago. Anytime I saw a complete serial with the known shipping date posted in a forum discussion or in an online auction I recorded the serial and shipping date. Since the owner had made the info public I figured it was OK for me to record the information. I did not record the model or track owner's names.
As many serious collectors note when discussing shipping dates, looking at the list makes it immediately apparent that many guns were not shipped in anything even resembling numerical order. I see many examples of guns only a few hundred apart in serials that were shipped years apart. Sometimes this is due to slow moving models (like the 38/44s after 1955) or because frames or guns simply set around for a while before being plucked off the shelf for shipping.
I met a man at a local shooting club who has a 5" 27-2 that is only 126 lower than mine listed here already. His was S 2977XX. Interestingly mine came from PA, and was shipped in '68, and he bought his new here in MI in '68. Pretty cool running into him.
His buddy had a 28-2 4" with S28XXXXX. I didn't memorize his totally unfortunately.
