What's making you think it's from 1953? Factory letter?
S series M&P numbers were used from 1945-1948.

Hmm, very nice. a 2" transition model. Very desirable to me.

Actually, it's probably a '47. It has a long action, which disappeared at the very end of 47 or very early '48. It also has the non-relieved ejector cap, which makes it post 10/46. It could be '46 or '48, but much less likely than it being a '47.
 
I think you ran into the same thing I did a few days ago. That serial number with an S prefix on an N frame would be from 1953.

Could you post the first three numbers from your serial number?
