Dumb question of the night ..... Is there a specific reason to purchase a S&W 10 MM revolver?

I currently own multiple .38's, .357's, .44's and .45's

Is there an upside to buying one other than for the pure fun of it?

Thanks,

Doug

Doug—I like the 10mm but rarely shoot it. I think it gives you true magnum capability in an auto loader. However, if you are just looking at a revolver I don’t know of any real benefits over a hot .357 or .41 mag and definitely not the .44 mag.

Looking at a hot Underwood load, you are talking 180 grains at 1300 fps or abot 680 foot pounds of energy. Nothing to sneeze at, and a powerful load in that big glock, Sig, Dan Weeson or old Smith autoloader.

But I don’t see a big benefit in a revolver other than the revolvers are unique and cool!

Not really. At it's best the 10mm is the equivalent to a good 357 Magnum. However you are loosing two rounds in capacity in any equivalent frame size and moonclips become required instead of optional. And when compared to the 44 Magnum in the same frame size and capacity...well there is no comparison. The 10mm isn't close to the 44, 45 Colt or even the 41. So aside from love of the caliber there is no real benefit to it.

Exactly. We already have the really necessary ones.

Shoot it as the 10mm Auto, until you get bored with it's excellent accuracy, then ream it out to 10mm Magnum & do it all again. That's what I did. :D

10mm Mag has ~33.1% more case capacity than the Auto, or about 5.9% less than a 41 Mag case.

Dumb Answer of the night . . . . . to shoot 10MM

Is that not enough reason on it's own?

There are actually 3 cartridges that the 310/610 family of revolvers are suited to shoot. Those are the 40 S&W, 10MM Auto and 10MM Magnum

But shooting 10MM Auto out of a revolver is not for everybody and that is why Smith & Wesson offers us so many chamberings in the N-frames.

If 10MM Auto doesn't tickle your fancy, then just pick one of the other offerings. We will not hold it against you :)

I happen to be a fan of the 10MM Auto cartridge going back to the day it was introduced and shoot it in everything from single shots to snubbies to long barreled revolvers to lightweight auto-loaders to duty auto-loaders to target auto-loaders to sub machine guns to integrally suppressed carbines.

I have been thinking that my next conversion might be a lever action or perhaps a pump rifle if I can find suitable donors

I'd say that the benefit of a 10mm revolver is the use of moon clips for really fast reloads. Beyond that, the 10mm has a slight advantage over the 357 Magnum, but falls well short of 41 Magnum ballistics unless you reload the 10mm above safe pressure levels and I do not recommend ever doing that with any cartridge.

So many folks tend to just throw around the name 10MM without ever mentioning which 10MM they are talking about, it makes many novices reading these threads think there is only one 10MM cartridge

Your comments are of course referring to the 10MM Auto cartridge

The 10MM Magnum cartridge yields an easy 200 - 400 FPS faster muzzle velocities over the 10MM Auto (depending on projectile weight) while staying within normal/safe operating pressures

Plus the 10mm Auto (and 10mm Mag) have a 37.5K psi SAAMI max while the 41 Mag's is 36K psi.

Twice, at the indoor range, I've had adjacent lanes ask me if I was shooting a 44 Mag when it really was my 10mm Mag.

I guess pure fun of it for me, never carried a 10MM, never hunted or competed with one, etc. But IMHO the "10MM Auto" is a fine pistol and revolver cartridge in it's own right. I've been a fan since the beginning. Had a Bren Ten, two of the early 5" 610s, Delta, Kimber, Glock, S&Ws, Blackhawk 38-40/10MM convertible, etc. I just have a S&W pistol and Ruger revolver in 10MM now. Still fun;)

BTW, Don't know how my Ruger revolver will work out, but the 610 revolvers were the most accurate 10s I owned. If it weren't for that darn hole, I'd have a new 610....

10mm is the best, most effective semi auto cartridge in existence. Sure, you can only get so much out of a handgun cartridge, and sure, the argument could be made that a bad guy wouldn't know the difference... but the fact is 10mm has superior ballistics capabilities. The only semi auto cartridge that might be more powerful would be 460 Rowland, but that's a cost prohibitive caliber unless you reload.

Because:
Bragging rights
It’s different
Uses moon clips
Shoots 10mm and . 40 S&W
Can be used in autoloaders

I must admit that the idea of having a 6-inch full lug S&W that would handle .40cal, 10mm and 10mm Magnum sounds like something I want to own! :D

The one I’m interested in is the Ruger GP-100 chambered in 10mm. It is essentially the same size as a L frame, but carries a six round cylinder. Shoots either 10mm or .40 with moon clips. Kinda like a 646 coulda, shoulda been! Yes. I’d rather have a S&W. But, I don’t see one anywhere on the horizon.

The long barrel is actually 6 1/2" long and these are currently in production.

MSRP is $987 but I have spotted them at shows (before the China Virus Crisis) for the mid $800s

I’ve seen around, including Sportsman’s Warehouse
