If you had both a S&W 19-2 & 19-3, both in 98% condition, and could only keep one, which one would you keep and why?

I would keep the dash two also. If the only difference is one is older, I would keep the older one.

Looks like a slam dunk - the older the better.

Unless they are unfired, they have limited Collector value, so I would keep the one that is in the best condition.

It depends on condition of both. I had a 19-2 and 19-4. The -2 was in better condition so I sold the -4.

I would keep the one YOU wanted to keep.
Actually-I would keep both and get ElPasso to build me a double rig so I could wear them both to the BBQ.

All things being equal keep the -2. There really isn't any practical difference between them though, only a slight difference in the position of the rear sight leaf screw.

The TT and TH were extra cost options but that does not make it a better gun.
For me, if a S&W is a revolver I want for hunting or target shooting then the TT and TH are preferable since they lend themselves to better single action shooting. The Target Trigger especially is more cumbersome for good Double-action work, hence it becomes a negative factor on a defensive gun.
If these Model 19s are 6" guns then I'd lean toard the one with the TH and TT. If 2.5" guns then the standard controls would be the strong preference.

But seriously, have you seen whats left out there? It's not very often I come across a NICE 19 anymore. They all look like they were used for a roof'n hammer!
Well pampered 19's fetch a premium if you can find one. The last 2 I saw at the local "Shoot em up" store were in "fair" condition at best. They were asking $650 each and wouldn't budge on price.
Went back 2 weeks later and they were both gone. Guy at store said they were sold in 4 days. Said a guy bought both and couldn't believe how lucky he was to find one, let alone two of them!

Just yesterday at a show I saw 2 model 19s in 2 1/2". They wanted $659 and $729. They were -4s. These were well used, with lots of bluing wear/scratches. Looked like someone took a file to the ejector rod on one of them.I'm shocked what they are asking for smiths in this condition. At best a glove box slammer for half the price i'd think.

You should be aware that the most notable change incorporated in the dash 3 revision (and some late 19-2's) was the relocation of the rear site screw away from the area that is most subseptable to flame cutting.
While the 19-3 is worth a little less if you prefer the more robust design you should reconsider it,
Also, selling the 19-2 with original stocks would put more cash in your pocket.
I would keep the 19-2 to look at and the 19-3 to shoot.

I would start selling blood and collecting cans before I part with a Combat Magnum. If this is something serious like a medical issue then I would see about selling it to a GOOD friend who might let me buy it back when money isn't so tight. If this is just a "I don't need two of the same gun" kind of thing then I bet less than a week later you regret giving it up.

I just picked up a S & W model 19-3 with 6 inch barrel and fully dressed; red ramp, white outline sights, wide target trigger and hammer, along with the target stocks. Got it for a song of a price. Can't find shipping or manufacture date. Serial number 9 k 697xx. And it has that deep mirror blue and the hammer has the case hardening effects. A beautiful gun. wish I had a true value on it. One gun guru in my area said it should be in the 700 to 1000.00 range. Let's hear from the experts as I have no clue. Have orininal box and tools as well. Thanks.
The book says 1976, but there are definite indications that this gun dates to 1977 (SCSW is not always precise).
I think four figures is a little bit high for one with a 6" barrel. I'm not sure even the 2 1/2" will command quite that much right now. At least around here, $700 would be about the top of the market for what you described.
Still a nice acquisition. The 19-3 is an excellent piece. Here's a photo of two of mine:
I'm a bit of a fan of the 19-2. This 6" shoots very well and is a joy to look at. The non-relieved diamond targets aren't original, but they came with the gun and there they stay.
