S&W 1911

I have a wish list for when the tax return comes and the 1911 form Smith is on it. My only concern is the external extractor. What do you guys with one think of it overall. I am intrested in one but dunno much about it.

I've had two SW1911s and have had no problems whatsoever with the external extractor.

Thanks Skeezix. I am just curious b/c the farther they get away from JMB original design the more issues that seem to arise with them.I mean all 1911's im general. I like the S&W but am consdering the Springer as well.

The external extractor are either like or hate thing when it comes to 1911's. I've got a S&W 1911 and have never had a problem with it. Some guys just can't stand an extrernal on a 1911. For me it works and I just don't worry about it.

I have two upper end S&W 1911 guns. Both made in the last 12 months. A total of over 5,000 rounds fired between the both of them. Not a problem with either of them. Never a FTF. Never a jamb or failure to extract.

Out of the dozens of handguns and out of the several 1911 guns I own, the two S&W 1911 I have are the best out of the box guns I have ever had.

I would buy another one if my dealer had one on his shelves.

Thanks for the replies. I am tyring to decide between the 1911 and the 686. Ye OLE RULER OF THE HOUSE (fiance) decided that its time for me another gun and im tryin to narrow it down. 1911 or 686?

Hard to go wrong with either choice.

Have three SW1911s (pair of 108282s and a 4.75" 1911PD) in the house and never had a problem with any of them except that one doesn't like MagTech ammo.

I have had 3 S&W 1911's and still ahve two. Both run flawless and are a joy to own and shoot. I also ahve a big $ custom Colt GCNM 1911 to in honestly, doesn't have allot over the out of the box S&W's. I think they are a good choice and a great value.

As for 686 vs 1911. That's personal. I would however point out that it's usually not hard to find a nice used 686 for under $500 where the 1911 will likely run more (new or used.) Shop smart and you might own both!

SHHHHHHHH. Wee that is my plan.LOL. I really like the 1911 platform but am on a revolver kick here recently. I have owned three 1911's so far and have beeen pleased with them all. I am glad to see everyone has good things to say on the S&W version. I just didnt know how well they worked.

FWIW my SW1911 will hand cycle snap caps like they were live rounds, my traditional Remington will always fail to eject the last snap cap in the mag and not fully eject 50%, if I load up a mag of snap caps. The ability to hand cycle dummy rounds say alot about the S&W external extractor.
I think the early Kimber pistols ext. problems scared guys away, IIRC they tried to make a Glock arm work on an 1911 platform.
Smith & Wesson knows what they are doing with an external setup.

Thanks for the answer 40. It seems everyone likes the Smith 1911. I trust anything with S&W stamped on it but mainly just wanted some feedback from owners/users of the Smith version. Yall have made my decision a little tougher now.LOL

I've got 2, one is a full size stainless, and the other is the commader sized. Both are older "billboard" models, and they both run great. I've had a few failures to feed on the fullsize, but that was due to some reloads that needed tweaking, and not the gun.

I have one S&W 1911, and the external extractor works fine. Don't give it a second thought.

Also, keep in mind that John Browning went to an external extractor on his next pistol design after the 1911 - the Browing Hi-Power. Whether it was considered more dependable, or easier to adjust, I don't know. But the fact that he used it tells you something.

Thats good to hear. I really like the look of them just wanted to find out more about them. I may go ahead and pick one up.
